*UPDATED* The Secret (Piano by Janet)

I really liked this piano piece of Janet's and downloaded it ages ago so that I could have a proper listen on my decent speakers and then managed forget all about it. I found it again by chance recently and finally got round to listening to it. As soon as I heard it I came over all inspired and sent my idea to Janet. Ever the kind soul, she agreed to let me mess with it and this is the result.......

The Secret

Any feedback much appreciated as always......

** UPDATE ** New mix uploaded 25/11/11 incorporating all your feedback / suggestions - thanks again for your help everyone !

Nice messin, buddy.  Man, that piano sounds so full!  Vocals could use a tweek, imo.  Nice collab!!  Oh, you arranged it nicely too!

I would eq some of the low end in the piano. It sounds a bit boomy. Otherwise, very nice messing around.

Very nicely done. Yes, like my song, the vocals need to come up front a bit. Everything sounds great instrumentally and a nice mix overall. Nice lyrics and nicely sung, just bring them up a bit.

That is really cool and I think you did a great job putting all the right accents around the piano parts which are fantastic as well. The vox performance is good and again perfectly worked in with the piano. Something very minor is going on with the vox at times. Very enjoyable.

    Hey, Paulo,

Nice work on this very cool song!

The acoustic guitar riffs, and Janet's piano provide a rich bed for the solitude of the haunting vocals, and you've also got a great mix.  I agree about maybe adding a touch of automation to your excellent vocals in a few spots where they drop in volume, but that's an easy fix for a really dynamite song.

    Really great stuff!

I agree with the above about the piano being boomy at the bottom.

Wow ! Thanks everyone for the feedback. I really do appreciate and value all comments. Sorry for delay in responding - I posted the tune and then ended up going on my travels for a while which I wasn't expecting at the time of posting. It seems quite a unanamous verdict re the vox, so I'll be revisiting them this weekend - thank you all for that - I always think that if lots of people say the same thiing that they must be right. Ironically, I actually turned them down a little just before posting as I wasn't sure if they were a bit overpowering. BTW for all of your information, the very last bit of vox is not actually meant to be heard as words as it's just gobbledegook and backwards gobbledegook at that - I was just messing with some vocal FX and it seemed to fit so I left it. However, because of your comments I can hear now a cuple of places that require a tweak.

Radio - thanks for the listen and the kind comments. You're right - Janet's piano work made it very easy for me to imagine the rest.

Herb - Thanks for the listen and positive comments - taken on board.

Terry - thanks to you too - I hear what ya say, but it just didn't strike me as being a song about fluffy bunnies if you know what I mean.

Warren - thanks man - good to see you back. Your comment re the vocals - you mean level wise too or something else ?

Vicente - thanks for your ears - I'll take a look at that piano now I'm home again.

John - thanks for listening and commenting.

Wookie - thanks for your time and the kind comment. I'll be tweaking soon.

Janet - to me, you already did all the hard work. You can always yell if you want me to try and add a little something to any of your tracks.

Rhinosynth - thanks very much - I particularly wanted to enhance Janet's piano rather than treading all over it, so I'm glad that you think it works that way. Can you be more specific re the vox ? Levels or something else ? (bearing in mind my comment re the last line)

Bob - thanks for the ears and positive comments - "haunting" is a good word. That's exactly what I was aiming for. I think I've spotted the little tweaks required for the vox now, so I'll re-post when done.

Spacealf - thanks for your time and kind comment. Glad you liked.

Mark - thanks for the listen. I'm on the vox. Glad to see you back.

Robert - glad to see you back to - haven't noticed you on here for ages. I was only listening to one of yours the other day - can't remember the exact title off hand, but it was the "fishing" one. "Seasoning" is also a good word for the little musical bits I added. Just what I was trying to do, so I'm glad it worked that way for you.

Guitarpima - Love it ! Wow ! I've got to be happy with that ! Don't think anyone's ever said that about anything of mine before. I do have a de-esser on there already so I guess it just needs a bit more of a tweak, so I'll get on that. Thanks for listening - glad you enjoyed. :)

Hey gave a listen on Soundclick - just passing on what I have been told before - a bit too much reverb on the vocals. Apparently this is kind of common with us self-producers.

Hi Paulo, very nice, maybe a bit to much reverb on the vocals. Piano sounds very nice J. Guitar seems a bit ahead of the beat, but I have no sense of timing ; )

Contratry to those who know better than I, I like how the vocals are hidden in the piano.  I think they could be a bit more clear (a bit more High EQ and a little less reverb).  It gives it a ghostly etherial feeling.  While Janet's piano is spot on, a little less bass to keep it from booming out might be a good thing.

Reminds me of Eric Woolfson and Alan Parsons.

suggestion------ I like the setting just eq the piano or the vocals differently

just do only one ----- piano need less mids more high end
vocals need more mids and cut some off the high end

    Hey there.

Nice work - very sonically balanced!  Janet's piano work is just superb.  Super-expressive.  Very nice to build on, for sure!  I agree with a previous poster that the low end could be pulled back a hair.  Some sonic enhancer on the piano might give it some sparkle too.  (BBE Sonic Maximizer).  One technique I've started employing on piano is to add a tad of delay.  I mean just a smidge.  What happens is this amazing 'filling out' that you just say 'wow' over when it's all mixed in the context of a full piece.

Voice - pull it out front a bit!  Don't be afraid - it's got character and emotion.  Bring it up more!  Love it!  At 2:23, some pitch-correction might be needed on that hanging note.

Synthy bits.  GREAT!  Well placed - good choices!  Love the mellotron-like strings.

Congrats!  keep the work up!  Nice nylon-string work, again well placed.

    Very nice Paulo!
    Piano work is wonderful Janet.
I think everything that's been said is pretty accurate (ie vocals not being far enough out and piano being a little "bottom heavy"), but this is still a captivating song.
    Yes, very Pink Floyd est.
Keep meddlin Paulo.  Nice work indeed

Thanks again for all the responses again - sorry I haven't been able to respond sooner - real life keeps getting in the way !

Bobby - thanks for the kind comments - glad you enjoyed. BTW dunno if you jumped on it or not, but the BFD Eco for $14 in the software forum is a very useful and very cheap addition if you want some more drum sounds - I got it and it's easily worth it and very easy to use.

Geeare - thanks man, you're very kind -  I've boosted the vox a bit in the new mix.

Charles - yeah I am a bit of a reverby guy - just like it that way. That said, I think the issue with this was more of a case of wrong type of reverb as opposed to too much, so I've changed it for something else.

Rik - thanks for the listen and comments - hopefully the new mix is better.

Scotty - thanks for listening - re-did the eq on the piano too, so hopefully better now.

Glen - to be honest I thought the vox level was about right, but I always say that if everyone keeps telling you the same thing that they're probably right, so I went with the majority and pushed them up a bit. I've tweaked the eq and verb too.

BIABDude - thanks for the listen and suggestions - hopefully better now

Tim - thanks for the ears and kind words. You're so right about Janet's piano, she really did the hard work here. I really like her "darker" compositions.

Martin - thanks for listening and detailed comments. I've taken them on board in the new mix. Glad you enjoyed.

amateur - Thank you. Cool is a good thing to be.

arlen - Thank you for listening and commenting - it is a great piano track isn't it ? Grabbed me form the off and made the rest very easy really. Hopefully the tweaks will have addressed your issue.
