UPS Delivery
Okay, this isn't a gear topic per se, but the subject of UPS versus FED EX did come up in another thread last week, and all of us will ship gear from time to time so... I said last week I preferred FED EX for a couple of reasons, and one was that they have offices open until 8:00 pm, so it's easy to pick something up in the evening if you miss a delivery. Now the other reason I like them better is that, about 14 years ago a friend of mine had a new Hard Drive delivered to his home via UPS. I think he paid over $200 for it. The UPS guy just left it on his back porch in the hot sun, and exposed to the elements (and thieves). Luckily it didn't rain, and the sun did no damage. Today, I came home from lunch to find my $2,000 JVC camcorder sitting on my front stoop. I had sent it in for repairs. First, JVC should have required a signature for something that pricey, so it's partly their fault. But it also had the letters JVC printed all over the box. You'd think the UPS guy would have known that it was a piece of electronic equipment of some kind and might be an expensive item to just walk off and leave. Fed Ex almost never leaves anything without somebody being there unless you call them ahead of time and say that you'd like them to just leave it somewhere. Signed, Really Bugged

Wow.. sorry 'bout that one. Yeah UPS has its shortcomings. However, a guy just asked me to send a Oberheim synth using UPS Ground instead of USPS Priority. He said UPS is more careful with merchandise. I don't know, I went ahead and did it. Price was reasonable.. $42 insured to Louisiana. Hope it still works when it gets there!

I would be inclined to put more of the blame on the vendors that ship. I've had many things delivered by both and most of my problems were the result of the vendor. Some automatically decide if a signature is required or not. Granted UPS has areas that are designated that a package can be left and it's up to the discretion of the driver as to where to leave it.

I also ordered something expensive. When it didn't show up I called UPS and they said it had been left on my front porch. I said I couldn't believe they would just leave something expensive sitting on the front porch. There response, I swear to god, was "our drivers have no way of knowing if a package contains something expensive or not". Point goes to UPS. UPS, pronouced oops. Where I used to work we had a UPS guy come out to inspect a damage claim on one of their packages they delivered. He sat on our printer table and broke it. On the other hand, I wish USPS would leave a package sometimes. They leave me a yellow note saying I have a package and have to pick it up. I have to take off during work to get to the post office near my house so I can get there before they close. When I get the package it is something that would have fit in my damn mailbox in the first place.

Most of the time, it worked out well and my stuff was in the garage locked away when I got home.

midiroom's technique has worked well for me, too. Don't you just hate it when you're anxiously awaiting a new toy, run down to the corner store and return to find a "sorry we missed you" tag stuck to your door? It's almost like they're lurking a block away just waiting for you to leave... If you have a garage, and your Ferrari isn't parked in it, leaving a note for the UPS driver to put the item in the garage works well, and they've always complied with my request to do so. After all, they hate to leave without delivering a package, it just means they have to return the next day.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

"It's almost like they're lurking a block away just waiting for you to leave..." I always feel that way. There have been times in fact that I've found the tag on my door and went driving around the neighborhood looking for the truck because I'm convinced they're just around the corner somewhere.

i got an entertainment center shipped UPS once, the box was nearly ripped apart and crap was falling out of it as i took it to the car. in fact there was one piece missing, luckily not an important one. could have been the vendor on that one too, but every time i get something from fedex, i usually end up getting it from their depot - at worst they leave it at the apartment office (UPS does this sometimes) and the box is never thrashed. given what i've seen and dealt with regarding UPS, getting stuff shipped fedex is becoming a priority for me. my neighbor had a big speaker sitting outside his door overnight. i knew it was a speaker because there was a big image of a speaker on this massive box. he plays his music too loud and i was very tempted but refrained from evil...

UPS has always delivered to the day or late. (if it says 5 days, it will be 5 days or longer) Fed Ex sometimes gets 5 day shipping items to you in 2 or 3 days, But never more than the 5 days promised. I also hate UPS because the driver goes 50 mph around our little cul de sac (15 mph speed limit) and I have kids 10 and 8 who play in the street. I have sent UPS hate mail because of this, nothing changes. JR

I dunno, both UPS and Fedex have overachieved and sucked in my experience. My most recent experience was an Edirol PCR-800 that I picked up from B&H in New York. I paid $7 for "UPS 3-5 day" shipping from NY to Seattle. The UPS tracking website showed it scheduled to take 3 days, which I was happy with. Two days after it shipped, it was here. So that was a bonus. But I've had both UPS and Fedex damage and lose shipments, take longer than expected, etc. On the whole, I don't think there's a material difference between the two. -b
