USB 3.0 Unnecessary?

i have most of my libraries on an external hard drive for use by my home studio 7xl.  that hard drive is usb 3.0 capable, so i bought a card to utilize usb 3.0.

here are the results of my usb 3.0 trial:

usb 3.0 is about 40% faster when reading from the external drive and writing on my internal drive (36 Mb/s with usb 3.0, 26 Mb/s with usb 2.0), but is 3 times faster when testing with HD Tach, which is a sequential read test, tho that speed may not be applicable to what i'm doing.

when i use the usb 2.0, i still get the following, for a project that has 15 midi tracks with alot of automation (EWQL SO, dimension pro, kontakt 4, etc; my RAM keeps me from adding more tracks on this project):

1) projects load essentially at the same speed for both
2) the projects play without drop out
3) exporting the audio from all tracks is similar using both.

if i have the success as listed above with a usb 2.0 external drive connection, does that mean i don't need usb 3.0 speed? or is there some scenario i have not considered when slightly more speed would make a difference.

thanks.

According to something I read recently. USB3 reads faster than Firewire but writes slower than Firewire. They speculated that future updates of the technology might be more consistent.

Here's something I saved that talks about USB 2, but I'm pretty sure it still applies for USB 3 (except that USB 3 is simply faster).  It should explain why the Firewire results are still favorable at times though.

    FireWire vs. USB 2.0

Question: Which is faster Hi-Speed USB 2.0 or FireWire?
Answer: In sustained throughput FireWire is faster than USB 2.0.

Question: If Hi-Speed USB 2.0 is a 480 Mbps interface and FireWire is a 400 Mbps interface, how can FireWire be faster?
Answer: Differences in the architecture of the two interfaces have a huge impact on the sustained throughput.

FireWire vs. USB 2.0 - Architecture
    • FireWire, uses a "Peer-to-Peer" architecture in which the peripherals are intelligent and can negotiate bus conflicts to determine which device can best control a data transfer

    • Hi-Speed USB 2.0 uses a "Master-Slave" architecture in which the computer handles all arbitration functions and dictates data flow to, from and between the attached peripherals (adding additional system overhead and resulting in slower data flow control)

FireWire vs. USB 2.0 Hard Drive Performance Comparison
Read and write tests to the same IDE hard drive connected using FireWire and then Hi-Speed USB 2.0 show:
    Read Test:
    • 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 33% faster than USB 2.0
    • 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 70% faster than USB 2.0
    Write Test:
    • 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 16% faster than USB 2.0
    • 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 48% faster than USB 2.0

You should check out the article on USB 3.0 Vs Light Peak, Intels new interface. There is a reason the industry has been holding off on USB 3 for awhile... They're all waiting to see what Intel releases!

There is always something new in the works.  How soon it will be avilable or how fast the industry will adopt it is another issue.

New Macbooks released today have Lightpeak which is now called Thunderbolt. So it's now out there.

and like USB3 lightpeak has no interfaces..
PCI bus was not saturated when PCIe came along (as far as interfaces go)
Firewire didint need replacing but yeah lightpeak is cool..

Yeah I'm looking forward to the audio devices that will be utilizing Lightpeak/Thunderbolt. I wonder how long it will be before we see the first Lightpeak/Thunderbolt audio device..will it be this year?

On the downside they are probably gonna be over priced, no doubt in the same vein as SSD's are in comparison with spindle hard drives.
