USB Port Extenders - Can't Use??
Can't use one to connect audio interface and midi controller? Each of those devices has to have own USB port?

Yes an Audio interface needs it's own as there's a lot going in/out of there. Always use the same port. Controller ?? not sure myself, mine is real MIDI,via the interface, If your laptop has only 3 ports, Use the first 2 for your Interface and the Controller, Then use a hub for everything else. It is recomended to use a powered USB hub.

Powered USB hubs are the only way to go. The USB bus in a PC (in reality an internal USB hub) only has "x" amount of power available and depending on the devices connected it can exceed the available power and the connected USB devices will not work or be flakey. Using an external self-powered USB hub will allow connecting more devices and not overload the PC's USB bus.

Ok. My laptop has one 3.0 USB and two 2.0 USB ports. I recently bought a powered USB hub for each generation of USB. At the moment I have the external hdd (project files) plugged in direct to the 3.0 USB, but I have the mouse, audio interface and keyboard on one powered 2.0 USB hub. When I saw a thread about USB extenders, I wondered if my keyboard latency and recent sound drops were because of the USB hub. I just started using the powered hub a few days ago - the same time I started figuring out the keyboard/controller. I'll try putting the mouse and hdd on a powered USB hub and give the interface and controller their own 2.0 USB port. Thanks for responding.

My MacBook Pro has only 2 USB ports. I use one for the audio interface and the second one to connect a (powered) USB hub to which everything else is connected - mouse, midi keyboard, dongle, etc. No issue whatsoever.

From the computer's point of view, multiple USB devices on a hub represent a single USB device and one interrupt request channel. The bandwidth is divided between all the devices, and only one at a time can be transferring data. Whether that's going to impact your audio and MIDI devices depends on what other devices are sharing the hub, and how much data is being sent by them. And it can be inconsistent. This is why hubs are generally not recommended for devices such as audio interfaces, video cameras and external disk drives that need to be consistently speedy. There is also the potential for power supply loading, as noted above. Using a powered hub can avoid that problem, although even powered hubs may not deliver enough amperage for multiple high-current devices.
