USB to Firewire converter.. Will it work?
Someone told me today that one can buy a converter that plus into your laptop USB port and converts to FW. Will this work for something like Yamaha i88x or RME Fireface unit? Could this be the solution to the never-ending Texas Instruments FW Chipset hunt?

Never heard of this, you may be better off using your expresscard port for the actual FW card you need.

There is such an adapter but what it is designed to do is to allow you to connect a DV camcorder's firewire port to a usb port to transfer video. Never heard of these adapters being used for any other purpose.

I've done quite a bit of seeking of such plugs when struggling with videos. Never came across with a FWtoUSB adapter/converter that's advertised to really replace a FW-connection. They only say "...to transmit video from camcorders etc...". External HDDs or audio interfaces are never mentioned. But who knows...engineer is a wise animal... PS: I just found a piece of user evaluations of one brand of FWtoUSB plugs (and lost the link :o( ) saying: " Useless product. Computer can not see an external FW-HDD connected with this converter."

You can adapt the wiring to get a signal out of firewire and into USB, but you will need software to understand what is coming in the USB port. Such software is available for certain devices to enable a firewire plug to be used to get information into a USB socket, but the adapters do not come with software. The only things I have seen that do that are some cameras etc., and the manufacturer of the device has to have written the driver for it to work.

Of course you can't do that. The data coming into either the USB or firewire port is digital data not audio signal. The data format is incompatible between the two, and may even be proprietary to the audio interface.

I mentioned the AUDIO outputs, not the USB or Firewire port. (rough schematic - objects not to scale): Firewire Firewire input <--------- AUDIO ------ output USB USB port [=fW cable ==] AUDIO interface output ---------- cables ------> input AUDIO interface [= USB cable =] port I should patent this.

I don't think I understand your post. It doesn't make any sense to me. The way I read it there are two separate audio interfaces involved, a USB interface and a FW Interface, which takes you far outside the ballpark we're in. Such a setup has got nothing to do with this thread.. If I've misundersatood, could you elaborate more, please?
