Ukelele?

Hey,

Ukeleles are all the rage these days.  As a guitarist, I'm thinking about picking one up.

Any recommendations on brand, price, etc?

Thanks.

Sorry, you lost me at "Ukeleles are all the rage these days."

I can't think of anyone who's either using one or wants one.  Did you mean to say mandolins?  Those are getting pretty popular.

Why even our own Strumster is playing a 'Flying V' uke these days, just like this one.

Dave, you are quite right about them being "all the rage these days" in the advertising & jingle end of the biz. Solo Uke with a female vocal used to = almost instant licensing for a decent tune.

But I also think they are on the "backside of the curve" now and will soon be out of vogue.  Some of the listings I see in TAXI for ad music specifically are stating "NO Ukelele music" ... when a recent guest was asked what he thought the next "big thing" was in instrumentation..... he replied... "do you play mandolin?"

I have a cheap uke and have not really tried to play it...It was given to me by my Mom, along with a Radio Shack midi keyboard and a harmonica.... I have messed with the harmonica a bit, and am thinking of playing in in a tune at some point.

Craigb! I can't believe that any one doesn't want one;) Check out my soundcloud (sig) and listen to my Proclaimers cover. It's metal featuring Ukulele. Awesome instrument!

Dave King - I own and play a Tennesee Ukulele which is a rather expensive one in today's market. I paid 800,- NOK which is about 150 something USD for it. It's probably cheaper over in your part of the world. The cool thing is that it feels like a proper instrument and not a toy. Not to mention the sound. It's great compared to many of the cheaper alternatives. I suggest you spend enough money to get a decent one or else it will just sound and feel like a toy and you'll probably get bored. with it. It's a good thing that even the expensive ones doesn't cost much money;)

    Have fun;)

And The Bapu has this one made by Kala:

But in all fairness it's a Bass (all strings tuned to Am of course)

Dave, just go ahead and get yourself a uke straightaway

If you can already play guitar or bass it's pretty straightforward to pick up - and one thing's for certain, you'll have great fun with it.

Jon's image above is the identical model to the one Ed sent me for a Christmas prezzie

And a black flying-V model to boot, does it get any better than that

Well I sit corrected!  Don Ho would be proud I guess!  (I still prefer the mandolin and regret having sold mine...)

Maybe this is a good example of why they are popular.
    Fantastic tones.

I tried to post this earlier but got kicked and forgot to do a re-post.

If you are serious about the Ukulele and Mandolin, contact C.F. Martin's Custom Shop and have one built, or do a search for one. They made them up until recently, I'm sure there's one out there somewhere.
