Unable to Register the DLL/OCX: Regsvr32 failed with exit code 0x3. **SOLVED**

Hey there gang.  I am running Windows 7, my Daw is offline all the time, I was trying to upgrade to sonar platinum from X3 producer and I got this error with my 1st install attempt:

C:\Program files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\CW120Auto.DLL
Unable to Register the DLL/OCX: Regsvr32 failed with exit code 0x3
So I did a little research on here, I ran windows updates... (hadn't done that since 2010) tried again, same result.
I installed Adobe Flash as suggested, tried again same result.
I ran as administrator.  Same result.

I realize that probably on the next upgrade I will be forced to either upgrade to windows 10 or beyond,  I would rather not at this point as I do not want to lose functionality with the older versions I still have projects in just yet (8.5, X2, X3) not to mention I haven't checked to see if my Presonus Studio One plays nice in windows 10 either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you!

If it is the case the machine has not been updated in 6 years and only one update pass was made (according to http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3401835), it may take multiple update passes to get the machine current.

Yeah - the first thing I thought of too was that you were behind with Windows Update maintenance.

Windows Update is like layers of an onion, where it takes multiple runs of it to get all of the maintenance caught up, so run it, restart if needed, and run it and update and run it and update, etc, until it gets caught up on it all, and that should clear it up for you.

Hope you can get things squared away quickly :)

The other thing is that from time to time, Cakewalk, OR one or more of the plugin makers will code up a release that REQUIRES you to be at a particular level of software.  This was true a while back with one of the X2 (I think, though might have been X3) maintenance release, where you HAD to be at a minimum of Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 in order to go beyond a particular maintenance version.  This was due to them building coding dependencies in Sonar to rely on some C++ run-time routines that did not come into existence until Service Pack 1 for Windows 7.

This kind of thing can and WILL happen again, periodically, for any software maker's code you install onto a Windows PC.  It IS the nature of the beast.

Cakewalk notified folks of the above minimum software level requirement, and also I believe built into the installer a check for the presence of software levels of Windows installed.  Other software makers may or not be so neighborly to do that too, so it pays to be vigilant about this kind of thing.

Anyways - best of it all to you with it all,

When you upgrade to Windows 10, you have 30 days to test your apps and if there's a problem, you can roll back to Windows 7. PreSonus claims Windows 10 compatibility, and I'm pretty sure you'll find the older versions of SONAR will work too. You may encounter problems with individual plug-ins not working; they may need to be updated as well.

If you're running a six-year-old version of Windows 7, I think you'll be happy with the Windows 10 performance improvements.

OK, Well I ran the updater again and it did find another service pack that it hadn't installed yesterday, so I installed that, restarted, tried sonar plat.  again.  Same result.
Ran updater once more, it found an update for the updater.  (I was like huh?  Really?  You would think it would have found that one first...)  So i ran that.  tried again, same error.
ran the updater again... it was searching for updates for an hour...  I stopped it.  This time installed the sonar command center thing (before trying sonar platinum again) and during that it said install windows visual redistributable ++C  and I thought "oh cool I read that that was part of the problem somewhere so maybe we are making progress!!"  Then I tried platinum again... Same failure error.

Running the updater, again.  Waiting...

IIRC, there is a bug in the Win7 update process which can result in slow updates.  It was discussed in the first report of the SONAR 2016.03 install problem you are experiencing

Alright....  Manually downloading and installing the 2 redist.  packs seems to have got me going.  Thank you Scook and everyone else for your input as well!   Now off to figure out how to log into whatever command center is?  and get this thing off of demo mode (i bought it so I assume I need to register it now).

There are two ways to activate SONAR, they are documented here http://www.cakewalk.com/D...p=Introduction.28.html

I might have figured out an easier fix for this(?)

I don't like doing massive updates to my Windows (7 64bit SP1), it can screw up other stuff. - I downloaded the MS VC redist from MS from the links here but it was an older version than I have, so I didn't want to uninstall that.
----
Anyway, I went into
Control Panel / Programs and Features /
clicked on the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redist (x64) 14.0.23918"
and clicked "Change", and then "Repair"
..After that my Command Center was able to do the update!
Yay me! :D
