Unable to create new audio file for recording

I have seen this pop up a few times on this forum, and I'm uncertain if anyone ever fixed the problem and how (or if I need to download and reinstall Sonar X3).  Running Windows 7 64-bit... plenty of hard drive space.  Program worked yesterday!  Now I can't get it to work today... cannot play back any file (music is in its own folder) and playback gives the message UNABLE TO CREATE A NEW AUDIO FILE FOR RECORDING.

I have an ASIO device... I plug things in and play/record, but the computer also goes through that device into a mixer and speakers so I can hear what I'm playing or recording.  My input and output information has not changed.

Something is interfering with SONAR writing to the disk. It could be an anti-virus program or a problem with the drive. There may be something in the Windows Event log about the problem. If the machine has more than one drive try creating a project on a different drive.

I don't have another drive.  I'm not even trying to write to a drive, but to open a file and play it.  Been using the same anti-virus for the past three years.

Try to run Cakewalk as Administrator. Sounds like you don't have privilege to write new files into your audio folder.

The anti-virus is updated... my point is... it's the same company anti-virus that I've been using without issue.

It may not be the AV but just because the company has not changed you know the AV software has. If the software has a facility to exempt programs consider adding SONAR to the list.

OK... that did it!  Certain files or folders were 'protected' through the anti-virus.  What I don't get is that I wasn't trying to record, save, or anything... rather... simply play back something created previously.  Thanks for the help.

I know some about SONAR but do not know the mechanics of exactly what the program does when playback is started. My original reply was based on reading a few other threads about the subject and the message itself. There are a finite number of reasons a program cannot create a file. Glad you got it working.

Just encountered this problem in the new Cakewalk by Bandlab and it was antimalware causing the problem. The antimalware called ByteFence and I'm not sure which program it crept in on but there it was and I removed it now it's all systems working fine once again.

I had never heard of ByteFence before.  So I looked it up and ran across this thread over at Malwaretips forum:  https://malwaretips.com/threads/ever-heard-of-bytefence.56677/

It sounds like an antimalware program installer that arrives bundled with something else that you download.  So in that case it is a potentially unwanted program (PUP).

Personally I would not want anything installed on my computer that I did not request myself.

Several posters on that thread indicate that this has caused them problems.  The executable itself is a re-branded version of Reason Core Security, but I am skeptical of why it would be distributed in this fashion.

    I would avoid it.

DAW: CbB; Sonar Platinum, and others ...

abacab: Thanks for the link, I was really bummed last night about the problems that little booger was causing on my mobile unit but I knew something was up when I went from many weeks of fully functional to the error and bad recording problems whew! glad I'm rolling again and I hope my problem helps someone else along the way if they encounter the same booger.
