Unable to import stereo WAV into two mono tracks

I have to admit that I'm very new to this.

I'm trying to import one WAV file with two stereo tracks (left and right) into two separate mono tracks, so I can apply different effects to each stereo channel and remix them.

I'm using SONAR LE 8.5.1.17
I'm importing using File->Import->Audio Tracks and I do have "Import as mono tracks" box checked. 

It still imports as a one track with two stereo channels.

Anything else I need to do?
Is it possible to separate two stereo channels in WAV into two mono tracks?

    No problem being new.  We all start from the beginning.

    I don't know about importing (and not in front of the DAW to try it), but if you already have the track imported as a stereo track, then you can just select the clip by left clicking on it, then go to Edit > Bounce To Tracks.  Then there's an option to split the source into two separate mono tracks.  

    Then you can go back and delete the stereo track, or just Mute it if you want to keep it around for awhile to delete later.
