wow, I don't know why you are having a problem. Mp4 doesn't work but .avi does for sure.
I don't want to ask you redundant questions.
    File
    Import Video

That's all I have ever had to do---.
Have you tried more than one video--like--maybe the one you are trying has a code that won't let you import. I know some .mp3 files are like that--a license agreement or something maybe.
    Hit me back.

    Hi Michael,

Thank you for the reply, yes I have tried multiple video and video types, no success.
What is the Sonar x1 module that takes care of the video? Is it external or internal?

I am using vlc, could this be the problem?

    Thank you,

    Ben

    Hey Ben,

Sonar 64 bit is really picky when it comes to video codecs.  WMV is the only codec that works most of the time.  AVI does not work for me either.  I find an external encoder and render everything WMV then import.

On a recent ticket to tech support regarding the issue, they blamed my machine for not having available codecs and sent me a link for more codecs.  The link gave my computer a virus and 2 maleware programs.  (I advised them not to pass on the link anymore)

    Good luck

I've had AVIs work fine. However, it's worth understanding what AVI actually is.

First off, Sonar's video support is not sophisticated. There are a lot of codecs that it won't handle at all, and then some more which it will import, but deal with in a very flaky way.

Now, the thing about AVI is, it's not a codec. It's basically a wrapper format, and video inside the wrapper could be encoded in any of a myriad ways. It really could be almost anything, these days.

Without a wider range of tools, you're a bit stuck, really. I also use Sony Vegas, which handles video very nicely (unsurprisingly, given that it's a video editor).

When doing sound to picture composition, I've got a template in Vegas I use. I load up the original video in Vegas, and the render it back out as an NTSC DV AVI. Sonar gets along with that just fine. I'm sure there are other formats that work too, but that's always worked for me.

As has often been said, a bit of an update to video handling in Sonar would be a massive plus for a lot of people. Not even advanced features, necessarily, just a bit of improvement on this kind of stuff would be great.

I handle AVIs in Sonar everyday.  I should be an expert at picture formats, but I am not, so having said that.... I tend to think that your problem is not with Sonar but your computor does not have all/correct drivers or it is a video card issue.

Any AVI generated from Quicktime Pro or Sony Vegas works fine for me.  To prevent any issues with Sonar I will always work with my own tried and true rendered AVI file.

With 64 bit Sonar on 64 bit Windows 7, here are the codecs that work for AVI files:

DV (must be a proper AVI with DV codec. I've encountered raw DV files with an .avi extension that don't work in Sonar)
    mjpeg
    mpeg4

mpeg 1 files work well, mpeg 2 files don't.

    wmv files work pretty well.

Sonar uses direct show codecs, so there has to be a 64 bit direct show codec installed for 64 bit Sonar to be able to use it.
