Undo Take Lanes

So I've got some projects that were started back in Sonar 8.5 and I'm now trying to finish in Sonar X3.

I've never in my life used the Take Lanes feature of Sonar, but upon opening these project files... And in a strangely makes sense kind of way, multiple tracks of the same verse are grouped into Take Lanes. This isn't the way I work, and I'd prefer to have each of these as it's own separate track (the way it was the last time I opened the project in 8.5). Is there any way short of soloing and then bouncing to a new track for each one of these take lanes to get it back to the way it was?

uggggghhhh...

a little update...

so i just reopened in sonar 8.5 to see if i could figure it out... and while I don't use the track lanes feature, I absolutely did have multiple recordings on one track. that must be why they all load like this... the difference is that if i cut out a little piece of one of those takes the way i used to do things in 8.5, the rest of that take still plays along with any other takes on the track... with take lanes, if i cut out a piece that take becomes instantly muted (not where you can unclick the M... it just doesn't play anymore).

i can't wait to be done with these damn songs... ugh...

Shift+click+drag the take into a new track. Or just drag it into the tracks pane and Sonar will create a new track for you.

ok that is a perfect start... now just how do i turn off track lanes for the new track that's created? because when i hold shift and drag down one of the take lanes to a new track it becomes its own track but with one take lane and the audio in that take lane... i just want it to be a plain old audio track.

thank you!

I figured it out!

When you do that shift and drag the take down to its own track, the actual audio track is as minimized as can be so you can't see the button that hides take lanes. So I was just seeing the minimized audio track and under it the take lane. But when I expanded the audio track I re-found the button to remove the take lanes and boom, we're good.

Thanks again. Once I'm done with this project I can burn these old files (and by burn I don't mean burn a CD... I mean never go back to them ever again haha).

Not to interfere with you finishing your project, but if you have fifteen minutes to watch some vid on the new comping mode with take lanes, you'll notice it's really quick to mute and unmute clips and parts of clips.

Yea I think before the next project I do that involves a lot of vocals I will check that out. These are songs for a project I was working on a few years ago and never finished and I'm just trying to go back and finish them up, and I used to work with multiple layers on one track... so in the process of opening up in Sonar X3, it changes it over to the take lanes which behave totally differently. From what I've read today it seems like you have to just throw out the old way of thinking to use them... so if I do start using them I'll definitely watch the video first. Thanks!

The new comping mode is great. But yes you will have to throw out the old and start new. It's worth it.

I got extremely confused for ten minutes, when I gave up and watched a tutorial. Now I'm really happy with it and couldn't imagine going back.

I used the comping feature last night on an old song that I was doing a redo of the vocals. It was stared in Sonar 8, vocals redid in X2, and now working with it in X3.

I have to say that the comping feature is just a work of art. Once you get use to it, learn the key commands, it's just a joy to work with.

And once I had my choices selected, I was able to use Melodyne to correct some notes very easily.

X3 rocks

Well I'm definitely looking forward to using it in the future. I'll check out the videos before starting my next project that includes vocals.

I want the option to remove certain things from the Smart Tool, such as Fast Comping. When the Take Lanes are set to a fairly low height, it's hard to get the Selector cursor to show up vs the Fast Comp cursor. I have to expand the height of the Lane to select in most cases. Sometimes the Smart Tool can be just a bit too smart. I'd like to see a way to select/deselect what other tools the Smart Tool can utilize.

Wow! This is a breath of fresh air.  When one considers all the angst that has been written about the loss of layers reading this is down right awesome. Thank you for sharing your experience.

+1 on the comping feature - it makes it far quicker and easier to fly through comping a vocal track.  Love it.

So nice for reviewing too - "yeah that one sentence isn't so great" - "oh ok I'll take one from this take, then it will sound like [clickdrag] this, see?"
Combined with Melodyne it has made my life easier, and left my clients not just happy but severely impressed with mah skillz.
