Undocumented Sonar Tip

This is neither in the Manual nor Help File (or I was unable to find it with an extensive search):

CTRL + Double click on two or more MIDI tracks (one at a time) allows you to open SEPARATE Piano Roll View windows, instead of the standard Multiple Track PRV.

This is especially helpful when building multi-voiced bass lines with multiple instances of Spectrasonics Trilogy, for example.

LOL-- Not bored; just aggravated with the multi-track PRV last night. I was glad to find a solution to it.

You're the man...man! Seriously, this is great. thanks.

I'm just curious though, how the hell did you find this? I mean, did you say to yourself "There's got to be a way to open two p.roll views..." Or did you just happen on it by mistake? Be honest now.

just aggravated with the multi-track PRV last night

Thanks Jeff , a nice find .. could you explain more what was so aggravating with the multiple tracks editing mode of the PRV ?

i just hope all the guys here are aware that you have a way to show/hide each track's events when working with multiple tracks the usual way ... near the M S R buttons at the right of the PRV.

Much fun with ours to natural resound! <G>

    I hate you,

No I don't...I'm sitting here in London 1000's of mile away from My studio setup and can't try it, this would be great, no longer would I have to guess if multiple tracks have same notes in the piano roll view.

Seriously brilliant, I can't wait to try it, unfortunately I'll have too...but great to have something to look forward to !

    Well done.

    Al,

Probably many are aware of the show/hide track settings (I'm assuming), but sometimes it's just easier to do things in a more ...well... easy way, no?

Thanks Jeff , a nice find .. could you explain more what was so aggravating with the multiple tracks editing mode of the PRV ?

    The scenario is this:

    Three instances of Trilogy running--
    1. Full Range Acoustic Bass
    2. Acoustic Bass gliss up
    3. Acoustic Bass slides

Three IDENTICAL MIDI tracks. I want to be able to remove notes from the main track in spots, and leave notes in the same places (while removing all the others) in the other two tracks for the occasional gliss and slide for a more realistic sound. Where the tracks are identical, working in Multitrack PRV can get confusing and frustrating.

Having all three tracks tiled on the screen with their labels showing prominently made the job MUCH easier and faster.

    Hi Jeff-

This is a very cool tip, thanks! It actually is "documented", if you want to call it that, but it's one of those cases where you'd have to know what you were looking for before you could find it:
    Locking Views
By default SONAR allows only one instance of each view, but you can lock the contents of most views, preserving the current view by forcing a new instance of the view to appear if necessary. Locking views is the only way you can have multiple instances of the same view open. Only the Track and Console views cannot be locked.

To lock a view, just click the lock button at the top right of the view. An unlocked view looks like this, and a locked view looks like this. A view can be locked automatically by pressing the Ctrl key when opening the view.

I came across this when I first got SE 4.x, but I'd forgotten about it. It will definitely come in handy, so thanks again!

    Hi All,

Actually, this has been a feature in Sonar for a while now and it can be done with other windows too. When you open the Piano Roll view or the Staff view for instance, see the little button in the top right corner of the window with the picture of a lock on it? That's the lock button. Just open a track in a view and click the lock button to lock that instance of the view. Then you can open more tracks and lock their views as well.

In the Sonar help file, this is called Locking Views. Just go to the index of the help file and type in Locking Views to see the info in the help file.

    Hope that helps!

    Scott

It does-- However, given the number of us long-time veteran users that did not know this and REALLY NEEDED it, I think this feature needs MUCH more context. Think you can cover it in your newsletter? <g>
