Uneven playback

I am having a difficulty with rhythmically uneven MIDI playback.  I have a 2.9GHz HP, 6Gb of RAM, Windows 64-bit.  The audio card is EMU E-DSP.  I work with Sonar and various virtual instruments from East-West.

The problems in precise playback become increasingly obvious as the MIDI events get closer together.  These events are entered with the mouse at the exact rhythms I want, but play unevenly.  It isn't a quantize issue.  A clue: if I use Cakewalk's TTS-1 piano, playback is fine, but if I use a larger sample piano (East-West or Synthology), the notes in a chord will not play back simultaneously.

Is this my audio card having trouble keeping up with samples?  My CPU is hardly making an effort, judging from the performance monitor in Sonar.

Thanks for your help...

Are you using ASIO driver mode? Make sure your latency setting is low enough. Try a 64 sampe size for the latency setting, and if you get drop outs or pops and clicks, go up in the latency setting size, 128, 256, etc..

Yes, ASIO.  Latency was set at 50ms but I occasionally would hear a loud pop.  I lowered the latency to 20ms and the playback is smooth.  No pops yet.  I think you've solved it.  If only everything were so easy!
