Unexpected links on new tab in Web browsers

When you create a new tab in a web browser, you are presented with 9 or 12 images that link to pages recently visited.  This seems to apply to the latest versions of all major browsers now.  However, in Google Chrome, some of these links seem to be to pages that I don't remember visiting.  Several weeks ago one of these links was to an old thread in the Cakewalk Coffee House forum entitled "Rethinking Prog Rock".  I had not seen that thread before, as I am not a frequent visitor to this particular forum.  The same link reappeared again last week and has been there every day since then, despite the fact that I did not click on it.  Eventually yesterday I gave in and clicked on it and even posted a reply in the thread.  Today the link has disappeared.

It's bizarre how this link kept re-appearing.  I have only been using Chrome since June and I did not import any settings from other browsers when I installed it.  Perhaps the software is scanning my PC for text phrases that reflect my interests and finding suitable webpages that contain the phrase.  If so, I find it a little bit disturbing.  I'll be watching out for similar links like this in future.

Look to the middle left of the page and you may notice an opaque arrow pointing left...

Yes. I see it now.  It seems that you can change the view from the icons at the bottom right of the page:  "Recently Closed" and "Other Devices".  I haven't figured out how to turn it off, yet.

Me neither but when CCcleaner found Chrome running... after my having shut off my computer and restarted this AM and I had opened NO browsers... and it didn't show up as running... I decided it was time to dump it. Now I just have t get used to the refresh button being on the other side of the screen... but at least I don't feel so.... watched.

"Hi, we're from Google and we're here to help you"... no thanks.
