It looks nice, Chad. However, it would be great to have some of the basic programs sounds to listen to, rather than songs.

Still may have to check it out.

Chad did put up a selection of pads on the main product page. If there's enough call for some straight-up preset demos, I'll be happy to do that. What I'd rather do (something I ran out of time for) is put together a little sampler pack. For example, 12 new programs, 12 new stereo wavetables, 12 new sequences, etc. That way, it can serve as a free demo of the big package, and also as a bonus pack for our loyal customers.

I have a couple more 'cover' songs that we didn't put up on the demo page, Alan. They're still in song format, but I took great pains to keep the presets utilized in them at the 'purest' form possible. Shoot me a PM if you'd like the direct links. In my opinion, they showcase 8 presets (each) very well.
What is the footprint on this ?????
Big. I think that it's about four or five times larger than the Rapture installation itself.
Don't hold me to this figure, but I believe that the latest download is around 92 MB.

Looks fascinating - except for the Rapture LFO limitation I'd be buying now (not fisounds fault I know); I have too many expansion pack LFO sets .

Does anyone know if Rapture can be modded in the same/similar way to z3ta+ (eg the virus_z3ta mod)?

except for the Rapture LFO limitation ... I have too many expansion pack LFO sets
That's a tough nut to crack. At one point, Chad had an installer written that allowed selective installation of each type of content. In testing, though, we found too much potential for screwing up the whole concept of U-120, so we scrapped it. There's no good way around multiple LFO sets at this point, but we're going to keep trying.

I will mention how our LFOs are a bit different: Effectively, they're sequencers. You can point them towards any supported parameter, and they'll increment/decrement in discrete steps. Some go 'positive'; others 'negative'; still others go in both directions. Many mix 'glides' and steps together within the same LFO shape. The complexity increases with higher numbered LFOs - 020 to 099.

If you use them as Pitch LFOs with a Depth of 1200 cents, I programmed each LFO to deliver various scale notes for each step in the 'sequence'. For more of a complete description, refer to the top of page 12 in the Universal 120 Program List & Documentation guide.

Don't get me wrong - I think this is probably the most exciting XP for Rapture & I'll probably buy.

But I do think Cake has dropped the ball on the LFO thing. IMO an active & growing expansion pack "indistry" is the most effective way to maximise the longevity (& profitability) of any piece of software, synths included. & the LFO limitation is a definite impediment to expansion pack growth/sales. Oh well, off to the feature request page, again

Kind of a catch22 really , most VSTi's don't have the LFO goodness that you can get out of Rapture so I can't complain too much . I'm sure that rene will learn and come up with a better implementation next time out ; The lfo thing and the fact that you have to hack the registry to move your samples around could use an update.

    Nice work Chad!

Ya, something has to be done about the LFO situation....

Please, Cakewalk, just allow them to be loaded in the same fashion as Oscillators... Then they will be unlimited, and the problem is solved... and we can all be as pig-ish as we want with our expansion packs... ;-)

    I would honestly think so.

I intend to use some of the patches for film sound/mood effects.

But there's enough here for everyone - plus they included enough content for the programmer types to modify to their hearts content...

Full Disclosure: I am not a beta tester for this product, but I am a satisfied customer.

Thanks to everyone for the support. Chad & I put quite a few months into this package, because we wanted to build something different. We're both ardent Rapture enthusiasts, and we set out to create something that we would use. One objective was to pack in as much useful content as we could, while trying to cover many different styles of music. Another target was to keep the price affordable. Times are tough for everyone, and this is a discretionary purchase.

I don't disagree with the discussion of the LFO limitations here. The writing was on the wall for that problem ever since Rapture was released. I'm not sure if it was expected that the UD-LFO feature would get the workout that it has in nearly every Expansion Pack. But I've got to give René big props for adding the step generator and envelope presets to version 1.2.x. Huge potential there: logical folder organization, unlimited (?) storage, parameters like the new EG retrigger steps being saved, ...

In many (but nowhere near all) cases, you can substitute a looping envelope, or a smoothed StepGen sequence, and 'emulate' an LFO perfectly. Hey, the LFOs are just smoothed step sequences anyway. If you can get away with the unipolar characteristic of EGs and SGs, think of it in terms of how an LFO behaves. It's fair to say that I included hundreds of examples of this kind of approach among the 1300+ .sg and .eg presets in U-120.

I didn't know that Chad and you work together.
First-time collaboration with Universal 120. We had been talking about putting something together for a long time, and U-120 is the result. Chad's a great guy, and a deeply creative & intelligent person to partner up with. The two of us had been heading in parallel, yet independent directions for an XP. But when we put them together, it all meshed in such a way as to achieve a broadened scope over the two original paths.

We placed Universal 120 under the Fisound header, but the concept extends much further than that. There are several more projects in the works with more up & coming sound designers; for Rapture, along with several other popular synths. The plan was to have U-120 at the tip of the virtual iceberg.

We're not done with Universal 120, though. We have several more audio demos 'in the can', plus video, enhanced tutorials, and perhaps an "Expanded Pack" for U-120 in the works. For example, I did a couple of 'period' pieces from the '40s and the '70s-'80s, as proof-of-concept.

The songs are built from 100% Rapture instances, using stock presets. Any 'effects' found there are introduced with channel aftertouch and/or CC1 (mod wheel) movement. Any panning or layering is the result of combining stereo wavetables, parallel DSP routing, and 'Width' effects.

Coming from you, René, I consider that to be the highest compliment.    Thanks for everything; especially the inspiration.

For those who have been asking about the 'Demo' / 'Bonus' / 'Expanded' Pack, I can say that it's still coming.  Chad & I have been pressed for time in two different directions, and it'll continue to be that way for at least the next few weeks.  We've been kicking around the ideas, though, and I'd like to ask what the preferences might be here:

    - A all-new mini-version of the complete Universal 120 set.  A dozen programs, a dozen wavetables, 12 Elements, 12 envelopes, etc.  These numbers aren't firm; just as an example.  Equal amounts of each type of component.

    - Just new programs.

    - Step-by-step examples of how to build new programs from the included 'Construction Kit' content.  A-Z.

There can be other combinations.  I'm looking for opinions.
Try to keep the requests reasonable, because we'd like to keep this Pack(et) as a freebie.

I don't disagree with the discussion of the LFO limitations here. The writing was on the wall for that problem ever since Rapture was released.
I've reread this thread several times trying to figure out what these limitations that are repeatedly mentioned are.  It's like many involved here were parties to another thread where this was discussed in detail but which I haven't read.  Can anyone summarize what this limitation is?

Edit: or better yet, point me to an earlier thread that discusses this issue.
