Put it another way, I prefer new bugs to be introduced quarterly, and disposed of monthly.

Let's don't forget about a chord track similar to the one in Cubase, where you choose a chord and whatever you play on synth is in the correct chord in the chord track, whether it is audio or midi.  I have already submitted a feature request several months ago.

Basically, if the Bakers can keep up the pace and deliver a monthly installment, that's been working well for me (like others have said, a nice little present every month!), so that would be my vote. I think it is clear that major new features will be much less frequent than that. I also think no-one would be terribly upset if a month came and there were nothing but bug fixes, performance tweaks and/or improvements to existing features; actually, I think many of us would be thrilled if a focus were put on the latter for a while. But overall my impression is that Cakewalk has a good thing going on, so I think they should keep at it and not pay too much attention to threads where forum members vote on what we think they should do...

Well, I didn't get the latest upgrade, because I just felt overwhelmed with new features that were coming too fast for me to keep up with.  For instance, I haven't really worked with the aux bus feature... or the Vocal Sync alignment (but plan to this week)... or the piano roll enhancements like the pattern tool.   I've had plenty of work interruptions... glitches that were not replicated later, crashes that I guess will not be fixed (Roland V-Vocal) or things that took time to stop and read the manual and search the forums to find an answer (like learning Audio Snap and take lanes) .
Soooooo, I would prefer major concept introduction on a quarterly basis with more of an effort to find out issues related to workflow and conflicts and get these fixes out monthly.  It seems daw software has gone from a major annual or bi-annual update process with several fixes as needed, to a competitive race to get more, faster features than the competition.  I got last year's Platinum upgrade because of AD2 and Melodyne, along with other significant enhancements, which seemed to be well-integrated with the new upgrade.  It just seems now I'm not keeping up with the monthly thing.  jmho

...New Features should be introduced less frequently ( e.g. Quarterly ) with maintenance versions in the intervening months...

Maybe I'd be more likely to upgrade to the current version if that were the case. The prospect of frequent reinstalls is very off-putting to me. Years ago I might have said the opposite. Back then I used to reconfigure my whole system from scratch every few months. But now I'm over it and just want to leave it alone while it's working well and focus on other stuff.

Also large downloads are a problem here. Monthly limits apply. So that's a significant factor too.

Kev, I think we Victorians think a lot alike. Every month I cross my fingers, toes, and anything else not tied down. I pray to the computer Gods that the Cakewalk update will go smoothly. It is after all a major software update, and by far the most used piece of software, that I rely on, on a daily basis. I think if I were a less stable personality (subjective opinion only), the stress of a major software update on an aging computer might be enough to have sent me over the edge (that's 15 major updates). But, I'm pleased to say, every single update has gone smoothly and (I think), I am finally starting to enjoy the expectation of monthly fixes and features.

My sincere apologies to the OP for expanding when he specifically asked not to. I rarely, if ever, post anything longer than is absolutely necessary. I just feel like this needed to be said.

Re: Unofficial Poll; New Features - Monthly, Quarterly, other? 2016/03/16 09:21:37 (permalink)
It seems like a good time to close out the voting since the results have been fairly consistent for a while and it is likely that from this point onward the Thread would become more of a discussion.  I want to thank all those that contributed, especially for keeping on point and roughly within the guidelines so it was easy to tally the results.   A summary of the results so far are given below.  They can be summarised roughly as follows:

Of the users that voted, 2/3 prefer the present Monthly release of New Features and 1/3 would prefer Quarterly.

Ship when ready: 2
Every few hours: 1
Monthly: 28
Every 2 Months:  1
Quarterly: 14
Other? 4

If you were wondering what my motive was for asking everyone's opinion it was this: I wanted to quickly get a feel for whether CW might move to a Quarterly release model at some point which, after seeing the results, it is clear that it won't.  Sonar is one of 3 DAWs that could meet my particular needs (the others are Cubase 8.5 and Studio One 3).  I have been using Sonar for around 8 years after switching from Cubase and it has been very useful during this time but there are a few things I do miss from Cubase and I am at a point where I can make a change if needed.  Of course each of these products have different strengths and weaknesses and to my mind the Sonar Monthly update is a bit of a weakness.

Cheers and thanks.

The current model is fine, although I seldom rush out and update per month.  Sometimes I wait a month or even two.  Sometimes I'm busy, sometimes I don't want to risk an update if I'm in the middle of something important (ie. making money) and sometimes I'm just lazy.  Because half the time I hook up the computer to the internet it takes half a day since MS usually has an update, too, and various other programs.  All I want to do is a little music and if it takes me an hour to start,  by that time I've found something else shiny that has my attention.

It's not like there's a massive new feature set every month; some are already geared towards minor enhancements and bug fixes and others introducing more comprehensive features.

So yeah. Maintain the status quo.  Monthly.

+1 current system!

The monthly model provides the "bakers" maximum flexibility in rolling out bug fixes, workflow enhancements, and new features as they become ready.  The update SYSTEM provides the maximum flexibility to the "users" to update when they like, whether monthly, quarterly, or whenever...

This has been pointed out many times... so why are we still posting about it?

Re: Unofficial Poll; New Features - Monthly, Quarterly, other? 2016/03/16 14:17:51 (permalink)
I look forward each month for new "goodies". I would hate to go back to a much slower update cycle. I agree with Vastman on this. I see no good reason to modify the current model. Unless of course its weekly.

Vastman
+1 current system!

The monthly model provides the "bakers" maximum flexibility in rolling out bug fixes, workflow enhancements, and new features as they become ready.  The update SYSTEM provides the maximum flexibility to the "users" to update when they like, whether monthly, quarterly, or whenever...

This has been pointed out many times... so why are we still posting about it?

we're still posting about it because it's basically a discussion about agile vs waterfall development models, neither of which is a given, they both have pros and cons; for us end users it is the last 2 phases, testing and deployment, that are most "visible"

management tend to prefer agile as more seems to get done, and waterfall is too front-loaded for fast-paced commerce to feel comfortable about it; with agile you're more likely to get bugs, but it's more likely those bugs will get fixed quicker

/fwiw imho etc

just a sec
