Update warning
I got this from one of the tech newsletters I get in the e-mail. Didn't read the entire article, but thought it may be of importance to some of us... ...."have been tracking reports of Windows machines crashing after being upgraded to iTunes 8. Apple appears to have hidden more than just iTunes and QuickTime updates within the iTunes 8 upgrade, and Bott believes these secretly installed files are prime suspects for the BSOD errors. My Itunes and players have been chompin at the bit to do the most recent upgrade....I keep clicking NO. Janet had some Itunes issues a while back....so I've avoided upgrades on those programs since. Something about the file format changing if I remember right.

I hate iTunes. I don't have an iTunes player and I don't have it installed on my machine. for mp3's I have a very cheap generic player which syncs with WMP.

that's right no iPod. no iPhone, nada. I have a cheapy mp3 player and it's not nearly as fancy as an iPod, but it's not nearly as expensive as one either. and my cell phone is just one of the freebies you get when you sign a 2 year contract. and it's 3 years old.

LOL! I think I had the one before that for about 4 years and it was also one of the free ones you get with a contract. Rob - that's even more expensive than mine - but it does sound pretty good.

Well my husband bought us refurbished Sandisk MP3 players for some awfully low price. I'm guessing around $50. It aks gas FM radio, voice recorder, video player, etc. I think the memory capacity is 2 gig but you can add extra memory to it (up to an extra 4 gig I think). It's a little bigger than an iPOD, but that's not important to us. We did update our phones to the family plan though. We did get the one with the qwerty keyboard (double flip) because the kids and now us mainly use the text message feature. The regular phones are a pain for text messaging. With teenagers, it's a safety thing (having cell phones) for us anyway. So, we are somewhere in the middle with all teckie stuff. Nutty/Annette

our teens have phones, too. but I did NOT spend the money on texting machines! I don't really see the point myself, especially for us talking to the kids and visa versa - if they need to talk to us, then they can TALK to us, or leave a voice message. it doesn't cost extra for that - texting does! texting does and requires much more concentration pushing the buttons than it does just to talk!

the only thing that texting makes sense for would be for kids in school who are texting each other sitting 2 rows away from each other in class so they can talk without the teacher knowing about it! otherwise I can't really see an advantage to it!

I know I don't have to defend our decision, but there are situations where texting can come in handy. It's just like e-mail, but we have it at our disposal. The kids have used it in the theatre for example or other places where they cannot use the phone. Sure they text their friends because it is free during the day. Talking on the phone is not. My youngest daughter lived with my sister for the summer 300 miles away because of our situation here. She was able to text us for free at anytime and anywhere in North America. Many times we have been at the hospital and need to check in with the kids or they need to get a hold of us. They do not use it to give the test answers to their friends, or maybe they just haven't got caught yet! Seriously, they are not allowed at school. They have to leave them in their lockers or they are confiscated. They are aware of that. Anyway, as parents we decide what works for us. We thought this was the best for our circumstances at a relatively small fee.

Yeah, I upgraded to Itunes 8, supposed to be better than the prevous version, right? ITunes 7 worked GREAT, ITunes 8 is all different, file formats are different, everything is 10 times slower, I'm hoping they come up with a fix very soon like they did with another previous annoyingly slow version................ ITunes 8 now burns CD's in CDA format, while before it was MP4's - you need a different converter now to create MP3 files from ITunes files..........why can't they follw the philosophy of "don't fix what ain't broke"?

I certainly wasn't trying to imply that your decision was wrong, Annette! please don't feel like I was attacking you. It's just my personal opinion that texting is just out of control for most situations. if it works for you and your family then I am not in any position to tell you that's wrong! go for it!

Thanks Albert for the warning, this might have been the problem I had a short while back, I'm not sure. That stupid Apple update program that I found in my control center is history! It tried to get me to update today and I zapped it. Thanks again.
