Updated: Come & Go

You might remember this one from about a month back.  I had the chance to record the vocals again. 3 tracks. Lead and 2 for doubling way down low. I also added a male harmony on the chorus to make it bigger..... country likes big choruses.

A few mix changes as well, but nothing radical there.

I would get her to sing this about twenty more times. She still does not sound comfortable with the song. It is a good song.

I can't comment on the mix, on notebook speakers, but she has a nice voice. I would touch her up in a couple of spots though.

    Bobby,
I believe that Herb uses sample loops for fiddle, but they do sound great, don't they?

Yes.... Scotty is correct. The fiddle is from Real Band.... a BiaB product.

Some background info on the singer of this song. Cassie

I was looking for a singer to sing on a song Pat & I wrote earlier this year. The song is called "Give me a chance". It was here on the songs forum a few months back and is on my soundclick site if you missed it. I approached several singers I knew locally that were outstanding singers with great voices. After a bunch of missed recording dates and excuses, my wife happened to mention that she saw Cassie sing in a theatrical production in town and she was good. Cassie and my daughter are good friends from school and she has spent several nights here with my daughter. So I knew her from the sleepovers but did not know she sang.

A few weeks later, Cassie happened to come over to hang out with Liz, and I spoke with her briefly. I played the song "chance" (with me singing a rough demo) and she agreed to try singing it, commenting that she had never recorded before. We did that recording and it turned out well, so since she enjoyed it, and it worked well, I send her invites to sing on the songs I write that seem to work well with female vocals.

Cassie is a young lady (16 yrs) whom God has blessed with a voice that has qualities about it that are simply amazing. She is still in the process of learning how to use that talent. Still a bit unsure, and lacking some confidence, a bit nervous in the studio as well, but I think as she grows in confidence in that talent, and learns how to control and project her voice, she will be a force to be reckoned with should she decide to pursue a career in the music business.  I found out last night that she is studying voice with a vocal coach. Since she is a junior in school, I will have the opportunity to work with her for the next year and a half until she goes off to college.  I'm blessed to be able to work with her and help her see and experience what she is capable of doing.

She's good now...... however...... Once she gets control of that voice of her's, she will be awesome.

I knew she was a young one from when you originaly posted the song.
There is nothing wrong with the quality of her voice.
The point I was trying to make was that, you as the producer need to try to get her to own the song.
You know, give her a chance to be as good as she can be, given her limited years.

    yeah... we're working on that.

She needs, like we all do when we're in a performance, to "get into the song" and let it simply take us away. Easier to do, I think, on a stage in front of an audience giving you energy and feedback, than to do in a studio, where you know what you do is being recorded for all posterity.

I've heard many singers comment it is harder to sing in a studio for that very reason.

She'll learn, as will I, since I have, up to this point recently, been working solo.

Bobby, don't feel bad about offering constructive criticism. That's how we grow and get better.

When I put songs up for review or send them to listing services, I don't expect the kid glove treatment.  If there's a comment section on the submittal form, I will request a "no holds barred" review. I wanna know what's wrong or not quite right to the smallest detail so I can either fix it or at least understand a 3rd party's POV on it.

If someone has a crit  that is good or bad, it doesn't bother me. If there is something wrong, in a song, I don't mind a bit when someone says so and then points out the specific issue and offers a solution. That's the kind of feedback that has really helped me grow not only as a musician but as a producer and engineer on my own music.

With Cassie, yeah, the girl has natural talent, but needs to learn to over come the things that she's doing now, that should be done differently and as a result, better. It's a learning process that we all go through.
I'm 110% sure she will "get it" and when she does..... wow!

In working with her now on 2 full songs and a 15 second radio spot, I can see an improvement even in that short time frame. Give her a year or so.....

Bobby, don't be afraid to give good, honest, constructive, and helpful criticism and observations.

    thanks for your input.

    Re:Updated: Come & Go 2011/11/15 01:11:02 (permalink)
Hi herb. First off, I really like this tune. It's a well written tune. Something that I think most folks can relate to. Good, strong chorus, and IMO, commercially viable. As for the recording: Love the steel guitar in it. The acoustics sound really good. The drums... Hmmm... The roll at the beginning just seems to be 'too much' (machine-gun like). Also, I'm not sure what it is about the drums in general, but they just don't seem to fit in to the same 'space' as the rest of the recording. Different reverb? Not sure. There seems to be quite a bit of reverb in general on this recording. The use of reverb really boils down to a 'taste' thing though. I don't prefer a lot of reverb, as it tends to push things to the back, and sometimes ends up sounding like those old country songs recorded back in the '60s. Using some pre-delay may let you use a fairly heavy dose of it, and still keep things more up-front (more modern, IMO). All in all, a nice job, I would say.

As for Cassie.... Man, you need to keep working with this young lady. She has tremendous potential. When she gets going in that chorus, she really shines. The quality of her voice leaves no doubt. But... The verses are not good. It sounds like she doesn't know the words... or the song. Like (as someone mentioned) she's reading the words as she's singing them. Maybe she just needs to memorize the words? Not sure. It sounds like she is cutting the ends off the words during the verses. In the chorus, she is confident and powerful. Keep working with her. She is worth it.

Great job Herb. Keep working with it so the screeners at TAXI will push it through to the next level.

She's singing with a lot of air and I'm guessing not a lot of support. Do you notice the huge difference between the quality of her voice when she sings the verse as opposed to the chorus. It might be just confidence, but I'm guessing it's technique.

I really like the chorus. Very country, very lady antebellum.

Last thing, in the beginnging, from the first verse, through the first chorus and the at the beginning of the 2nd verse there doesn't seem to be enough of a dynamic change. I only listened once, but I don't recall if it was the drums or what, but it reminded me of how most country music gives you two distinct emotions. One in the verse and one in the chorus. I didn't feel that.

Now, when the chorus repeats in the end, I feel it distinctly. It feels right. But that's because I don't have the verse as a comparison. does that make sense? I really like the work though. excellent! I especially like the minor falls on the chorus. Way cool.

Josh:  Thanks for popping in and having a listen. I'm glad you liked the song. we're hoping the song is well received where it has been sent. Aimed at one of the male/female groups that seem to have become the latest thing in country music.

We wrote that so the chorus, when it arrived, would be "Nashville Big" .... the mantra these days in Nashville is the chorus has to be huge.... I agree that she was definitely more at home and comfortable  in the chorus.

I hear a bunch of songs on the radio that I'm not a big fan of the verses but the chorus just sells it. Not trying to use that for an excuse, just an observation from my own listening experiences.

Thanks for listening and sharing your comments.
