For some really useful free mixing and mastering VST's, click on THIS LINK to go the a thread set up by myself and Legion - there are screenshots for all 25 VST's plus a link to the download page of each one.

Most of the VST downloads are compressed or 'zip' files; a great free and easy to use program which will uncompress or 'unzip' them is the excellent ZIP GENIUS

COMPRESSORS/LIMITERS/EXCITERS:

* Antress Modern Compressor

* Bootsy Rescue

* CS Multiband Compressor

* Elogoxa X-Cita

* GVST GComp

* Kjaerhus Classic Master Limiter

* Pushtec Leftover Lasagne

* Sweetboy T-sledge

* Tessla SE

* If you are prepared to spend a few bucks on a 'must have' piece of analogue style compression software for guitar, bass and drums, I'd heartily recommend downloading the demo of the wonderful PSP Vintage Warmer 2 - I'll guarantee you like it so much you'll end up buying this sometime!

BASS SPECIFIC:

* Elogoxa Baxxpander

* Otium BassLane

EQUALIZERS:

* Linear Phase Graphic EQ

* Habib EQ31

* Kjaerhus Classic EQ

* Voxengo Overtone GEQ

SPATIALIZERS:

REVERBS:

* Anwida Soft DX Reverb

* Kjaerhus Classic Reverb

* Freeverb Too

* DaSample Glaceverb

* SIR 1 Convolution Reverb

A 'must have' in your VST armoury is the (free) Voxengo Span - this is a great Spectrum Analyzer which you can insert anywhere in your project to see exaclty what the audio 'looks like'. Used in conjunction with EQ this is a very powerful tool.

VST SUITES

At some stage, I'd recommending downloading and trying out all the free stuff from these sites:

* AcmeBarGig - an ever growing list of VST's from forum member Ken (Johnny McFly)

* Antress Modern Plug-Ins - one download for all plugs

* Blue Line Pack - one download for all plugs

* Kjaerhaus Classic Series

* Melda Production Free VST FX

* Voxengo

I've kind of learned that it may be best to download a few at a time, try them and then quickly discard any that you don't like or cannot use. It's very easy to get so many plugs that you simply have too many choices. It may also be best to find a few good ones that you can get comfortable with. I find it best to have a few that I understand and know how they work and how they will sound rather than constantly fighting to get a sound with a plug that I'm not familiar with.

Yeah, it could work Bill.

That's a very old recording which needs a lot of work - I like the tune so I might do it justice one day and re-record it, it sounds abit tame to me now!

Yeah I've fallen into the trap like most of us Steve, As someone here mentioned its so easy to get sucked in to all the mechanics of the software which is really cool although it nackers up the business of actually music to some degree.
I decided to put something together this evening and there's not one plug in in sight. Have a listen when you get time and let me know what you think.
I'll really have to try and get my head around what sort of music I intend to concentrate on...trouble is I like allsorts (Not liquorice).
If I could find my style I could concentrate on improving my style like you've done with the "Metal"

I'm assuming it's Medlioza I'm listening to Alan - it sounds great!

Actually I agree with you about the plugins mate - less is often more for sure.

At the moment, I can get such a good tone to record my bass and guitars with from my TonePort/Gearbox, there's not a great deal to be added later.

My new EZ Drummer is a great bit of kit [pun intended!] for getting some decent drums into my projects and there's a lot of tweaking you can do in the program, plus I'm starting to learn the basics of sending each virtual microphone on the kit to a different track, so they can be processed separately.

So at the moment, I'm finding I'm only regularly using three plugins for the audio tracks, my wonderful PSP Vintage Warmer 2 that goes into the guitar bins, the equally wonderful Gearbox plug-in that I add all my guitar and bass effects with and a neat little 20 band Graphic EQ that came with an old version of Sony Sound Forge which shapes my rhythm guitar tone and stops it stepping on the bass guitar too much.

The other omnipresent VST is Cakewalk's excellent Boost 11 which, since I acquired it with Home Studio 6XL, finds it's way into the master bus of all my projects.

I was worried about getting Plugin Overload myself. Especially being brand new. So for now I downloaded craploads but only installed a handful from Voxengo until I get used to them. I also renamed them so I could more easilly decide on which one to select.
For instance if one compression was specifically for mastering, instead of leaving it names "elephant", which tells me nothing. I would name it COMP-MSTR-voxengoelephant
andt the same with the others. It makes finding what I need much easier, while still telling me it's brand and model.

RE: FREE GUITAR VST PLUG-IN LINKS 2008/10/02 22:38:26

Tom, just be aware that, although some of the Voxengo downloads are 'freeware', some are just demo versions which require you to purchase the full versions to get the full features/functionality.

Also, the demos, although apparently fully functional, may also be designed to be just that - demos! They're not going to give you full functionality in a demo that they're hoping to sell you the full version of.

If I remember correctly, one of Voxengo's 'spoilers' on their demo stuff (which includes the 'Elephant' software) is that the program emits a 'noise' every 30 seconds or so which a program like GT will record.

Yep. I just found this out 10 seconds ago and came here to confirm.
Apparently, 90% of what I downloaded are demo versions. Their either Beep or Cut Off every 30 seconds. Yayy!
So I need to get some real free ones. Oh well. I assume it was in the fine print somewhere, but I just got too excited and downloaded like a madman.

RE: FREE GUITAR VST PLUG-IN LINKS 2008/10/21 07:45:21

Hi there Austin

Unlike some Cakewalk programs, Guitar Tracks doesn't automatically scan for VST's when you open it - consequently, you have to tell it the location where new VST's have been installed.

Open GT and from the menu bar, select Tools>VST Configuration Wizard (GT's name for the VST Adapter)

If for some reason this option is not in the list, you'll need to install the VST update patch - click on THIS LINK to go straight to the download page (you'll need to restart GT for the update to take effect).

Once you have the VST Adapter open, click on the Add button and browse to your Shared VST folder.

If you've simply unzipped the .dll files straight into this folder, simply highlight it and click OK - you'll be taken back to the main VST Adapter window, now click on Next then Next again at the following screen and finally OK when the confirmation screen appears.

If you unzipped your VST's to their own folders and then placed these folders inside the main Shared Plugins folder, you'll have to direct the Adapter to these sub-folders - it doesn't automatically scan more than one level down.

If you intend using the VST Adapter a lot, I'd recommend putting a shortcut for it on your desktop - it's a good idea in any case because it will mean in future you don't have to open GT3 every time you want to use it.

By default, it installs here: Start > My Computer > HDD(normally C drive) > Programs > Cakewalk > Cakewalk VST Adapter 4

Open the VST Adapter folder and right click on the vstconfig.exe file - from the options, select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)

Hope that helps Austin, let us know how you get on.

Steve
