Updates for Pro-MB and Pro-Q

Updates are available for both Pro-MB and Pro-Q.

Pro-MB gets a full-screen mode and horizontal zooming like Pro-Q has. Basically, Pro-MB gets Pro-Q's makeover but they don't charge extra for it this time.

Both get support for high-res monitors. Windows 8.1 introduced something called "High DPI", which just means higher screen resolutions than the usual 96 dots per inch. Doesn't apply to me, but maybe you care.

There's also a sale going on, but I can't tell you about it because this isn't the Deals forum. Let's just say I finally got Pro-Q2 for less than yesterday's lunch.

That's good news. I hope you enjoy Q2 Dave.

I've gotten spoiled by it, especially the steep low cut slopes.

The sale on Pro-MB is only 5% off the you-already-have-a-bundle price. One of these days I'm going to snap it up.

Dave is there a decent comparison in any of the Melda tools?  People regularly brag about the filters in Fabfilter Pro-Q and the update is supposed to be even better. I want to get a go to EQ. If I had the money Ive spent on vanilla EQs I probably could have had one by now.....yesterdays lunch? What is this sale thing you speak of?????? I need to find it. :)

For Pro-MB, yes. MDynamicEQ does the same stuff and is less-expensive than Pro-MB, as low as $42 during the previous sales. I also find it quicker and easier to dial in than Pro-MB, which is surprising given FabFilter's beautiful GUIs versus Melda's homely UIs.

Pro-Q is another story. With version 2, Pro-Q now has a couple tricks that nobody else does. You can't beat it for fast EQing, and it's light enough on the CPU that you can drop it onto every track if you want to. For straight-up static EQ, Pro-Q remains my go-to equalizer. But for problem tracks, and for vocals and bass, it's MDynamicEQ.

Pro-Q ain't magic. It's just another equalizer and no better at the job than any other quality EQ. What distinguishes it is ergonomics and efficiency. Sound-wise, Pro-Q and MDynamicEQ are equals.

Thanks for your thoughts Dave. I am leaning heavily toward Pro-Q but it is a bit on the expensive side. Not out of line with others in this bracket...the comment " It's just another equalizer" does surprise me a little as I understood that it has a better filter section in it. My interest in it is nothing to do with the GUI although I like what they have done with it...I'm more interested in whats under the hood and how it compares to the others....interpolation interference in cheaper equalizers is one reason I'm thinking of stepping up. Better filters are what I'm after and any suggestions there are welcome. Thanks!

You'd think, with a name like FabFilter, that they might have some inside track on what makes a good filter. Well, they do, but it's not proprietary knowledge. Lots of other people know how to make good filters, too.

What makes Pro-Q special is its user interface. It takes very little time to get the hang of it, and once you do you'll find that dialing in EQ can be much faster than with a less-ergonomic equalizer. But that ugly old-style EQ with just knobs and guess-where-you-are frequency markings might ultimately sound just as good with enough twiddling.

I don' t think of FabFilter Q as being much faster, and I don't care so much about speed, but Fab seems pleasurable to use while others can seem annoying.

Plus the dark gui graphics make it easy to see my reflection. I'm the Morris Day of EQ tweakers.
