Upgrade Sonar And Computer
I posted this question in the Sonar Producer forum and got one reply. That forum moves very fast so I thought that I would post it here as well. Any help is much appreciated. I will be getting a new Computer and upgrading from Sonar 6 producer to Sonar 8.5 P. What is the best way to get all of my projects from SPE 6 to SP 8.5 in the new CP?
Sonar 8 PE, Windows 7 32 bit, Intel w/H55 chipset, Intel Core i5 3.2GHz,2x Seagate 500GB SATA,4GB DDR3/1333, Presonus FP10, Roland TD 20, Mapex Maple, Paistie, and a bunch of other noise making stuff.

do you have your projects on a separate audio hard drive or on the same drive as your operating system?

Hey Beagle. Same drive as operating system.

if you're buying a new computer, I'd advise buying one with 2 hard drives (both 7200rpm drives). I'd also buy an external USB drive case for it. then you can put one of the drives in the external USB case, transfer all of your projects onto that new drive, then install it in the new computer (I'd advise using it internally for permanent audio drive). make sure you move CAKEWALK PROJECTS folder and all subfolders onto the drive. then when you install sonar, just point sonar to the new drive for the audio projects.

I'm not sure what an external USB drive case is but I will do some research. Thanks Beagle.

This past spring I did essentially the same thing. I had been running Sonar 5 on a Pentium D (1st generation dual core) and XP 32 bit. I upgraded to Sonar 8.5 PE on a Studio Cat w/ an i7 with Windows 7 64 bit. The Studio Cat came with 2 hard drives one of which is a music drive. Everything from my old machine was copied to an external USB hard drive exactly as it was on the old machine. I set up my new file folders on the music drive of the new machine and have been moving the files over on an as needed basis. Essentially, I am opening the file originally saved in Sonar 5 and then saving in Sonar 8.5. Reminder, I know this is probably just stating the obvious but remember there are 2 “paths”, one of which is the audio file associated with the project (where that file resides depends upon your own personal book-keeping technique) … make sure that file winds up on the external hard in the right place.

If your new machine has a drive bay open, consider installing your old C: drive in there. That way, you've got all your projects and any other odds 'n ends you might otherwise forget to copy over. Once you're sure you've got everything from the old disk, wipe it clean and use it for libraries.
