Upgrade from Home Studio XL v.7 to X1 Essentials?
Greetings. I am having a hard time deciding if I should upgrade from my current software (Home Studio XL v.7) to X1 essentials. I am by no means an expert at using this software, but I do have need of the virtual instruments and I believe it is $50 to buy this addition for HSXL7 and not much more to upgrade to X1 so that is why I am stuck. Like most here I play in a local band and I also work with local musicians in assisting with writing music and this software really helps me with this. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read this and I appreciate any feedback.

if you are serious at all about doing music in the future, just upgrade to X1 period. I did from hS6XL, and I wonder why I didnt before. Cian

Thanks for your response. I think I am going to go through with it; especially since I need the instruments and X1 comes with them. Another couple of questions that I have that you might be able to answer. 1. Should I invest the extra $ and get X1 Studio? 2. I am thinking about doing the download vs buying a "hard copy". Is Cakewalk pretty good about allowing you to re-download the software if ever you need it? I get a little nervous when buying a product that is delivered in 1 & 0's vs a box. Not saying that my concerns are justified, but I haven't completely bought into the 100% digital purchase trend. Thanks

Usually just an email will provide you with a new link for your download as they do have a time limit on them. If you need the virtual Instruments why not go the whole hog and get Producer. the advantage is that once you're at that level the upgrade is always minimal. especially now that they are doing these small addons that are only available with the Producer version. Producer wil give you everything you need in one package without having to have any other fx or instruments. Especially now that DIM Pro 1.5 comes with it and it has over 7 GIGs of sounds. Check out the comparison between the different versions on the Cakewalk site here

Sorry, I actually meant to say get X1 producer, thats what I upgraded too and now that I have it I nearly cringe when I look at my home studio setup, but hey its all about the end product and how you make your music. Cakewalk are pretty up to date with stuff like that but why not just download all the X1 files on an external harddrive with all your codes etc. so its always there anyway Cian

I had Sonar 7.0 studio this time last year and I can say the upgrade was worth it to me just for the added vsti's that you get in producer versions. If you have some growing pains in X1 and still working in 7, you will be able to use the synths and effects, except PC, in 7.

Perhaps one day I will make that investment, but as it stands now I would have to shell out $300 vs $70 for X1 Essentials of $100 for X1 Studio. My current experience with this type of software doesn't justify the expense. Thanks much for your response and advice!

I bought the MP3 encoder addon sometime back. I am assuming that this will still work on other Cakewalks products regardless of which I decide to buy? I will do some more research/comparisons on the X1 family, but I am fairly certain that I would be best served buying the X1 studio version. As I improve and increase my knowledge on this software then I might make the jump to Producer or whatever high end version they have out at the time. Thanks for your input, whack. I really appreciate it. These forums are very impressive. Everyone seems really knowledgable and nice and, most importantly, they seem willing to help. You can always tell the strength of a product by the community it serves.

Yes, I had to buy the newer one for Sonar 7, I had an older one from Guitar tracks 2.0 days that does not work in current versions, but the new one that I bought with Sonar 7 still works in X1. Hope that helps.

And I am assuming you have no regrets? I am racking my brain trying to figure out which way to go. I guess it is a good position to be in, but I want to make sure that if I am going to spend some $ that I get something that works for me. I have really enjoyed HSXL7, but as I am improving in it I am realizing that it lacks the features I am looking for. I work with local musicians adding lead vocals to the instrument tracks that they send me (.WAV format) so I wasnt really looking to use the virtual instruments until I started writing songs for some people and thought it would be a good thing to have them so that I could convey the "tone" and "mood" of the song to the others so as to set them in the right direction. That is when I realized that I would have to spend $50 to get the instruments for HSXL7 and thus the debate began. ;-p I guess I will look a little deeper into the X1 family and see if I can find anything to justify spending the $300. Thanks much for taking the time to respond with your thoughts!

I spent a lot of money on 3rd party vsti's from EWQL and IK before upgrading. No regrets at all, the added VSTi's alone made the upgrade worth it to me. If 8.5 producer is still available and more in your price range I would even consider that. I got 8.5 a month before X1 came out and a good many of the vsti's came with it. Good luck my friend.

StarTekh X-1 full all the way !!! Heh! I am seeing a pattern with these responses! I think I found a compromise, my friend. I am going to buy X1 Studio for $100 and try it out for a bit. If I find myself "wanting" then I can upgrade to X1 Producer for a reduced price of $200. Either way I look at it I am gonna have to shell out $300 for producer. Doing it this way gives me an opportunity to try out a "thinner" version to see if it fits me. Thanks for your input.

MP3 encoder worked for me, anytime I had to reinstall the home studio version. then again I didnt have to do it with X1, must come with it. Defo the smartest and safest way would be to try the demo. Best of luck! Cian

Kewl. Thanks for the confirmation on the MP3 encoder. And I agree with you about trying the demo. BTW, I checked out your site. Very kewl, man. Listened to Fingerprints and Back Home Again. Great work. Back Home Again is a damn tear jerker. The vocals are spot and the still shots are perfectly placed. The song just reaches in and robs you of your emotions whether you want it to or not. Well done!
