Upgrade from MC2 to MC5

Just want to start by saying that I really appreciate all the information on this board.  I was looking for information on how to do something we hadn't tried and discovered that version 2 didn't have the capability we needed.  So we decided with the great offer going on right now it was time to upgrade.  You all helped us make the decision to buy the box version of MC5 rather than the download because of the extra sounds.  All of that before even registering on the forums.  LOL.

So now to the questions:

1) I've read on the forums that some people keep MC3 or 4 because they have things that MC5 doesn't include.  Is that true for MC2?  Should I keep MC2 (or certain parts of it) on the computer or just remove it?

2) Will my MC2 files work within MC5?  How about MC5 in MC2 if I decide to keep MC2?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I'm not sure what MC 2 has, but if it's similar to MC 2003 or MC Pro 24, you probably have the Edirol VSC, Session Drummer 1 (probably called Session Drummer, since 2 and 3 hadn't come out) and DreamStation DXi, Square 1 and Triangle II. Those are all worth keeping in my opinion.
But I read that DX synths and effects are problematic on modern computers with 64-bit OSs, meaning they probably won't work. They work on my Win 7 64-bit computer in 32-bit emulation mode. It won't hurt to keep MC 2.
They probably used different file names in MC 2 than they do in MC 5, so while you can open the MC 2 files in MC 5, if you then save it in MC 5, you won't be able to open it in MC 2. Same thing for new projects created in MC 5; you can't open them in MC 2.
But you've also opened up the door to a new world of VST synths and effects, plus ASIO support, an audio driver used widely in modern audio interfaces.
    Welcome to the forum.

Thanks, Greg.  You're right; I know it has Edirol and DreamStationDXi.  We're not up to 64-bit yet, so that won't be a problem.

The new world of VST synths is the reason for the upgrade.  We've been recording with MC2 for about 5 years now; simple stuff compared to what a lot of people on here are doing.  If he wants lots of orchestration, my hubby will pull in sounds from his music notation software (Sibelius) and I'll do the vocals along with that.  Otherwise, we just record vocals and keyboard simultaneously.  I feel quite sure we're only using a fraction of what MC can really do.  LOL.

    Thanks again.

S4J... I keep MC4 because I like the GUI and flow better then 5. Although 5 has some nice things, they are usable in 4 so I open 4 ...99% of the time.

I think the older 2 & 3 have some outdated aspects with how they handle synths that the newer 4 &5 have overcome.

I have both Music Creator 2 and Music Creator 3.  As mentioned in an earlier reply, both versions include Dreamstation DXi synth and the Edirol Virtual Sound Canvas.  Both versions will work with most VSTi's as long as registration or security such as the Iloc is not required.

There is no difference in file structures between MC2 and MC3.  I believe Cakewalk considered MC3 a minor upgrade to MC2.  Major differences are smoother graphics that allow the use of of slightly bigger, and better detailed, track icons and the inclusion of a Roland driver for the 1 in / 1 out USB to MIDI interface.

The reason I upgraded from MC2 to MC3 to because MC3 was part of the USB bundle.
