Upgrade from X1 to X3

I'm considering upgrading to Sonar X3. I currently own Sonar X1 and was wondering what the upgrade cost would be if I skipped X2 and upgraded to X3 vs upgrading to X2, which is currently on sale for $49, then upgrading to X3 for $149?

Thanks!

    A fine question - dunno.

I would think upgrading to X2 now would be a fine thing.  I am confident that it will be less to upgrade from X2 to X3 than from X1 to X3.

Additionally, X2a is a fine product, and you may choose to upgrade to that now and then try out X3 as a demo, prior to purchasing that upgrade - just in case there are any snags with X3.

Just make sure your system meets the requirements for X2a first, in any case.

it's normally more if you skip a version, but if you do get x2.. you might as well wait a long while to get x3 if you get x2.. and if there are any issues with it you have a more stable x2.. but if your tempted to buy x3 and in a rush, then I'd not bother with x2.. it all depends on your mentality regarding it.

the other daw I use by another company , I'm waiting for them to perhaps release a newer version, then go for a grace period update.

DO NOT GET X2!!! You will spend more money buying X2 and then X3. Just upgrade form X1 to X3 ,this is the cheapest solution if you go by the past 12 years of upgrading pricing

Once we get more details of what X3 offers, you can compare it with what X2 has to offer and THEN, see what fancies your palette.

Doesn't really matter. Right now if you buy X2 on sale and the upgrade to X3 it will be the same as if you wait and upgrade to X3. I would wait if I were you.

Hmmm...can we read between the lines and conclude that the upgrade form X2 producer to X3 producer will only be $99 not $149? Or am I misunderstanding Andrew when he says the cost will be the same for the OP.

Could be. The Sweetwater price was $149.00. That was the boxed version, not the download version.

I believe the boxed version of X2 is available for $29.99 once you have already purchased the download version.

No, I wouldn't assume that. The upgrade price from Producer X2 to X3 is $149. You can figure out the rest of the math for the X1 Producer price.

Good question - is the $149 upgrade for the download or the box.

As much as I've always liked having the box - SONAR 2 thru SONAR X1 - with X2 I finally broke the habit.

I always get the boxed version. I know it costs extra but it's worth it when it comes time to do a re-install. I hate downloading programs, especially large programs. The download always seems to quit about half-way thru....or slow down to a snail's pace. I have a nice collection of Sonar boxes happening here.

One thing I've found is that not all features of one version is found in the latest version, so having the complete set gives you all the goodies. For example V-Vocals is included in X2 but not X3. So if you want V-vocals from X2, better get it now while you can, as it won't be available when X3 comes out.

i usually like having the box too. but the extra 30 bucks each time adds up (would be up to $90 for me with this upgrade). My backup drive has a copy of each install file of every download purchase I make, Cakewalk or otherwise.  Plus downloading Sonar is still much faster than getting it shipped.

On another note: i think it is a bit ridiculous that Cakewalk has not made an official announcement at this point after all the leaks this past week. Online retailers and the Gearslutz press desk have the release slated for tomorrow...... yet nothing from Cakwalk. No pre-release video, not official sale date, just tidbits of info from admins on the forum (which I am thankful for at least).  X2 was announced in fine fashion, but this seems like a cluster****.

I think it's all understandable given the recent major developments with the Gibson/Tascam takeover. We'll find out how much so tomorrow at 10:00 AM, when a major announcement is scheduled. Gibson/Tascam may want their name on the packaging before it's released. We'll see.

You can always download it and burn it onto DVD's or even save it on your hard drive. No need to download it again. I have a folder on one of my drives for downloaded installers. Gotta be worth doing to save that box surcharge.

I'll pay the surcharge for the boxed version. I have better luck finding my software that way. It's all stacked up right over my monitors, and organized perfectly. The factory made dvd's are all in perfect condition, ready for a re-install anytime. I don't have to go digging thru piles of scratched or defective dvd's that way. I like it this way.

No, I wouldn't assume that. The upgrade price from Producer X2 to X3 is $149. You can figure out the rest of the math for the X1 Producer price.

Let's look at it this way. The included Addictive Drum is the full version which cost $150. So it is like you pay for AD at $149 can get X3 for FREE. That's a bargain!

Absolutely.  I have a huge archive of purchased/downloaded software stored on a network share on a ReadyNAS.  I don't ever touch a box or a DVD.  This is so much more convenient.

As far as backup goes, I have a separate ReadyNAS that is a backup stor, with incremental backups taken automatically every week.  Then every month I copy that backup NAS off to a USB hard drive that either goes into a fireproof safe or else goes offsite.  Everything I do makes its way automatically to those offsite backups eventually.

Every year or two I find a rainy day to go through that whole archive and delete the stuff I am certain I will never use again.

Faster too. DVDs are slow compared to HDDs. I keep all my software backed up on a secondary magnetic drive. Makes reinstalls way faster. Just click the installer, and the program flies onto the SSD :D.
