Upgrade options

I have MC6, Sonar8 and 8.5. I find myself always using MC6. It helps of course, that all of the plugins from Sonar 8.5 producer are availible to me in MC6. I guess I just prefer the work flow and GUI of MC6 better. It makes more sense to me and I quickly find what I'm looking for. Sonar 8.5 has me scratching my head a lot. So what are my best upgrade options? Should I download Sonar X1 studio for $79 or will X1 producer add much more? I would like to have a hard copy because I think I'll be upgrading my computer before to long. If I download a crossgrade will I be able to download it again later for free? If I got Sonar X1 would I be able to delete all of my other versions?

upgrading to X1 Studio would give you a few extras.  Audio Snap, V-vocal come to mind.  those are powerful tools.  Producer would get you the ProChannel strip, which I have been using a lot lately, but I also bought the Expanded and all of the plugins available for it (except for the softube bundle which requires an iLok).

it really depends on what you need, but I would say if you can afford Producer and Expanded, it's well worth it.  if you can't - X1 Studio is still worth a lot depending on what functions and features you use.  but for $79 it's almost a no-brainer.

regardless of what you get - why would you want to delete the other versions?  you could, but they don't take up that much space, don't take up any resources other than hard drive space if you don't run them AND if you delete them you'd have to reinstall only the plugins and softsynths from those version if you wanted to keep using them.

there were some things included in S8 and S8.5 and even MC6 which are not included with X1 any version.

You can have multiple versions on the DAW since they are all stand alone and not upgrades that load over the old.

They do allow sharing of the plugs and such, which is cool.

You can also share projects between them without a problem. Even though they say there might be issues opening a project on the older versions that was created on the newer ones... I have never had one not open and run properly.

Only you can decide if X1P is right for you. The main thing would be.... do you need the bells and whistles in X1P as well as the other plugs and FX that are included? If you are happy with MC6 and the plugs that came with 8.xxx that work in it, why upgrade?

If you do decide to DL X1P  or for that matter, the files for your existing MC6 and others.... be sure to burn the DL files to a CD or DVD and label it. That way, no need to worry or waste the time having to DL those huge files again.

What version of 8.5 do you have? If it's Producer, you won't get that much new stuff upgrading to X1, but you do need to learn some new workflows.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

I'd personally just stick with MC6 and learn it. Use the plugs and FX from 8.5 and if and when you absolutely need to upgrade to X1P then do it.

actually he won't really need to learn new workflow - MC6 is the same as X1 in that respect.

and as far as the new stuff he'd get - he'd get ProChannel, GR4LE, maybe some others, I can't remember what all came with the X1 producer upgrade.

A new question...What if I got the Roland Quad capture? It comes with Sonar X1 LE. I wonder what that would do for me?

If the Quad suits your needs, get it for what is is. Don't expect any frills with LE. It's bare bones. At best, it may offer better track count and I/O than MC6, but even that is questionable(I haven't checked the specs lately).

LE is a limited version.... kinda like the taste samples they give out in the supermarkets... just enough to make you wanna buy the whole package.

I'd say the same thing as Robert. If you want the Quad.... get it for itself. Don't expect LE to be anything more then a taste of the real thing.

I really don't think you'll gain anything useful with LE.  It does allow 8 simultaneous inputs where MC only allows 2.
