Upgrading to Platinum... advice req'd
Guys, I'm thinking of taking the leap from X3 to Platinum (and maybe from win 8 to win 10 at the same time) I have a quad i5. Will I get worse performance from moving from X3 to Platinum, or will it remain roughly the same? Thanks!

Hi. Your performance will increase with both SONAR Platinum, and Win 10. All the best.

Hi Eggster. There is a great and measurable improvement in performance between X3 and platinum on any OS. That much is clear:) When I upgraded my first win 7 system (that had been running win 7 for some time) to win 10, I also saw a vast improvement. For me however, the performance difference between a clean install of win 7 and win 10 was far less impressive, leading me to the conclusion that a fair amount of the improvement people observe could well be due to a new install/upgrade rather than sheer performance increase. Just anecdotal observations though. YMMV of course.

Correct there are major optimizations in Platinum that will make it run much smoother than X3 or any earlier version (on any OS)

Thanks guys - it just worried me that the minimum system requirement for platinum is higher (i suppose obviously) than the system requirement for X3.

I noticed a considerable change in performance and stability. also noticed a large change in crash recovery. meaning: not that I crash often, but any time I used to crash in sonar it would take 10-15 minutes to recover (for sonar to release my audio driver) now its almost instantaneously. if a crash happens, I just restart and sonar opens right up.

Well, I updated to Platinum and went windows 10. What a nightmare that was. I've spent the whole weekend struggling with it, and now have a PC with no software on it at all. Certain synths refused to open, some crackled an popped, others were so slow to start. I'm not sure what the problem was (my ineptitude with computers, maybe) At first I thought it was the Win 10 update, so I wiped the system, went Windows 10, and started afresh. Didn't work. Went back to 8.1 and started afresh, now the stuff that worked fine before doesn't work. Could it be my Onyx 400F? What on earth have I done????? The moral of the story is : if it ain't broke, don't fix it! :(

That's awful news Eggster! Did you use the rollback in win 10 to go back to 8.1 or a fresh install?

I used the function that allows me to wipe everything and go back to factory settings (as it arrived to me).
It is awful! I was so enjoying the flawless performance of my system previously. Silly me!
I guess my question is what do I do next?

Do you by any chance have a backup image of your drive? If not, unfortunately it is time to start installing drivers and software from scratch:( I absolutely recommend using something like acronis true image to back up your system drive once you have everything installed. I couldn't count the number of times this has saved me. Only takes about 10 mins to restore all of your system to its previous perfect state, no matter what happens.

crackle and pops are almost always due to audio driver / buffer settings. something that probably easily could have been adjusted. (I say easily in a general type of way)

Thanks Tenfoot - of course I didn't create a backup image! That would have been sensible! I'll take your advice in future though!
chuckebaby, I tried some outrageous settings - mega long latency - and still crackles, fizzing, glitches...

Chuck is absolutely right. Once you have your software re installed, edit>preferences>driver settings>asio panel should be your first port of call!

"Does the Mackie 400F even have Win 10 drivers?" Very Important as JonD is saying first thing to see in an upgrade are audio drivers compatability. Peace

Win 10 driver - not specifically. But win 7 driver worked in 8, and I used asio4all at one point with great success.
I'm really fed up... :(

Asio4all is a band aid at best, it just tries to fool Sonar into thinking it's a proper Asio driver when it's not.

I might give up recording and turn to fishing.
The weirdest thing was that uvi player wouldn't even start! Bias amp crackled, certain synths worked standalone in 64bit, others in 32 bit. Strange.

On the upside, if you clean install Win 7 or 8.1 and your software and drivers, Sonar Platinum will be humming along in no time - and you'll love it. There's nothing like a clean system! Just don't forget to take that disc image before your next adventure:)
