Upgrading to Windows 7: 32 or 64 bit ?

Hi guys,

Newbie here.  Am currently running Sonar Producer 8.3 on my old XP machine. Want to upgrade to a quad core with Windows 7 Pro to get more CPU power (getting dropouts currently).  Should I just get Win 7 Pro 32 bit to keep things simple ?    Or take the leap to 64 bit and deal with issues as they come up ?  I assume my current Sonar version is 32 bit, but is there an option at load time to set it at 32 or 64 bit ? (Don't know if this version 8.3 will run properly on 64 bit)

I have some other programs, like Dreamweaver CS4, that apparently won't work on the 64 bit OS platform.....

Thanks much !

    I have a dual boot XP/Win 7 64 PC - covers all bases.

Sonar 8 is both 32&64 bit. I would recommend that you install both to avoid any plug in issues with older projects.
You also need to consider driver availability for any hardware you use.

Are you sure your dropouts are definitely CPU related ? I am running X3, which has a higher theoretical min spec than 8 on a dual core machine with no issues whatsoever.

There would be no advantage to installing 32-bit Windows to run Sonar 8.  Even Sonar 7 works fine without issues on a 64-bit platform.

It's a pretty common problem, especially for businesses that use very custom software, when upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit that some of you important software will no longer run.
In some cases there is not even a 64 bit equivalent. So to me the best solution is to just move on and bring everything else up to speed with a nice shinny new system,  but keep an older computer running to use that old software.
XP computers are basically a dime a dozen. Most local computer shops will have a pile of them that they sell for $50. I got my laptop for free because the hard drive had died and the customer wouldn't pay for the cost, so he bought a new one. For $50 I got it going again.

So go for it, upgrade your Sonar gear as it will be a huge improvement for you in 64 bit.
SOnar 8 runs better in 64 bit and all the included plug ins will work as before.
But use an older beater to manage your web site, I'm still stuck with MS Front page 2003. Good enough for me.

Ohhh...  and one more thing...   what if I can scoop a deal on a newer computer with 64 bit Windows 8 or 8.1 ?   Will Sonar Producer 8.3 run on that, or should I just stick with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit ?

I don't know, I am using Windows 7 with Sonar 7 which works fine with a 64-bit computer. In fact, a lot of programs I had that were installed by the OEM are 32 bit along with the antivirus program I have. In fact, Firefox browser is still 32 bit, as I have more 32 bit programs than any 64 bit programs to start off with.
Also Sonar 7 is run with Run as Administrator and also in compatibility mode of Windows XP SP3, but I do not use actually any softsynths yet, but they load up when Sonar starts.
