Upgrading to X3 when moving from Windows XP to Windows 7

I have been using Sonar X1.  Have bought X2 and X3 but have not installed those yet.  I have been using Windows XP, but now that it is no longer  being supported, I am changing to Windows 7, which I had already installed on a separate removable hard drive.  So I just need to insert that drive in place of the XP drive, and I will have the Windows 7 operating system.  And I have enough RAM for Windows 7 (in an i5 system), but I have questions about how to get all my programs operating properly again.  I have everything saved on a large external drive, and will get my data to transfer from it.
 
Do I need to reinstall Sonar X1, and then go through the upgrade installations for X2 and X3?  Or can I shortcut that routine? 
 
And for other programs, my understanding is that I will have to reinstall all programs, but can copy over the data.  But if the data is on other external drives, I believe I will not have to copy any of that data...just leave it in place.  Am I correct?  Any other suggestions?  Thanks.

    You can go straight to X3 with proviso that some plug-ins are not included with X3. It will be necessary to install a minimum X2 to get V-Vocal. Also R-Mix and VC-64 are no longer included in X3 so they too will need to be installed from a prior version. Beatscape was dropped from X2 but the REX files were rolled into "Loops and One Shots" which are included unchanged (along with DimPro) in X3.
     
    When it come to programs, it is a matter of registry entries and (some software's) registration routines that lock the software to the PC. This is why most software must go though an installation process. Generally data is different, it needs to be where the software is configured to find it. It may be OK to leave on external drives but internal drives usually offer better performance.

    Thanks....that helps to clarify.
    But I wonder if I want to retain V-vocal and R-Mix, do I have to start with X1, or can I just download X2 and they will be included.
    Also, if I directly install X2 from the upgrade installation file that I received, will what I have in the program be the same as if I first installed X! and then installed X2?

    All upgrades are full retail versions of SONAR at a special upgrade price. There is no need to install X1 if you do not want it. It is also unnecessary to perform a full install of X2 to get V-Vocal and R-Mix. Run the advanced install option and select the SONAR program and R-Mix to have the two plug-ins installed. A side effect will be the installation of the X2 program but none of the bundled plug-ins (other than the ones selected) will be installed.
