Upgrading to an RME Fireface800

Yippee! I've finally bit the bullet and ordered my new Fireface 800. Should be here (Australia) in a couple of weeks form the US.

I'm going from a MOTU 828MKII which has served me well. I consider this a move up in quality for AD/DA as well as pre-amps and overall functionality. Not that I've got a complaint about the MOTU at all. If it wasn't so new I would have gotten the 828 MKIII but the RME was so cheap (AUD$1600 inc free shipping from the US compared to AUD$2999 from retailers in Australia).

What have I got to look out for when installing Fireface 800?

Any quirks I need to be aware of? Any special install routines, like do this first then that kind of thing.

I'd appreciate a heads up from any in the know.

might be good for you. dunno

but are you sure your not gonna get slapped with any import t ax? might not be so cheap then. the delivery must cost them a fair bit also (for them) and the warrenty thing also.

my friend bought something in the states years ago a lot cheaper and the UK tech people refused to support it as it was a different company that provided support.

    £849.99 in the UK, that's $1,742.15 AUD

I thought we had it bad over here regarding prices, although thankfully a lot of the things I used are Europe based.

No I've checked it all out. There are dealers in Australia who will sell the unit down to about 2200 or 2300 dollars but that's it. Occasssionally you'll get a new one on ebay fro 1999 from a dealer but that's a rarity these days. The unit from the US is from a genuine dealer and the warranty is recognised around the world. Checked with RME. All good as far as getting it goes. I'm more interested in the installation and any quirks I might find as it'll be running off my laptop. No issues with the MOTU so I'm hoping the Fireface will be just as good in the compatability department.

There's nothing in particular about the Fireface drivers that I could share except to expect two new icons on your task bar (Total Mix and RME Settings Page). The FF800 drivers are supper lite (>1MB) and are very stable and easy to install. Just read the manual thoughrougly as there's A LOT of info in it and use ASIO drivers.

Actually, I just thought of two things pertinent to the FF800 settings:

1- Make sure the Pan Law is the same in Total Mix as in Sonar.

2- Limit the bandwith to 'Analog' if you're not using the digital I/O. This will save some processing.

Other than that, enjoy the new toy and let us know how it sounds to you.

    Take care!

I like mine, but their support (in my experience) can be "arrogant" YMMV.

Hey Mike i recently purchased some PA gear from the states but couldnt find a free freight deal - sounds like you've done well. Any hints on who you purchased from?

Make sure you download the short video on Total Mix. It can be difficult to understand at first how it routes. Set the volume in the last quarter range I believe it's like that to to reduce noise.
    Very clean sounds.

I thought so too until I understood the fact that they are a German company and are accustomed to the more straightforward, "aggressive," and confrontational tone and nuances of that language and culture. One of my best buds has lived and worked in Germany for the last several years and he says that their "terse" and "arrogant" conversational style takes some getting used to for the non-Germans. He went into great detail to describe it all to me along with some native German friends of his when I was last there visiting. It seems that they are even more terse when speaking (writing) in German than they are when they converse in English ...which is pretty scary!!

Back to the original topic: I *love* my FF800! 98% of the drivers I have downloaded from them have been rock solid ...and the ones that were not so stable were replaced within a few hours of being posted. Good stuff!!

that's somewhat what I experienced too..
last time I got a reply from tech-support within 2 minutes.. that was great.. but not 100% the correct answer to my question.. and they didn't bother to reply again.. annoying !! (at least)
this happend every time (out of 3) that they've done that..
even if you ask the same question twice you won't get very far..

I must also point out that it annoys me pretty much that everyone is so highly honoring their driver-update-frequency..
You could, on the other hand, say that if they'd do it right once.. but well...

I just expect extraordinary support from RME, which I am still missing, and a 100% stable and working audiointerface in every situation.. that is also still not the case..
I have/had always problems using the FF800 outside of sonar.. I am now at a point where I gave up using my pc for anything else than audio.. but getting there with the FF800 was a long and rocky road.
