Using FL Studio as a VSTi in Sonar X3
Hi, is there a way of recording midi from FL Studio as a VSTi in Sonar? I've added it to the instrument track - gone into FL Studio and set up a drums loop. I then come back into Sonar - if I press play the loop created in FL Studio plays normally. However, is there a way to record it into midi in the track in Sonar?

I think you need to set FL up as a Rewire thingy.

FL recommended to me not using rewire because of all the crashes

Have you checked all drivers are up to date? Or perhaps some setting in Sonar or FL is wrong? Just doing guess work.

Thanks all. Drivers are all fine. Definitely must be a setting in either FLStudio or Sonar - just can't work out what that setting is!

I have never tried to do anything like that, so am grasping - does making sure the Enable Midi Output setting in the Insert Soft Synth dialog box help? Also, while others may have a more elegant solution, couldn't you save the midi data - export it - from within FL Studio, to a file somewhere, and then import the midi file into a track in Sonar? I work with midi tracks all the time, as a keyboard player, but I always am simply working directly with midi tracks and audio tracks in Sonar - sorry I don't know more about doing what you are attempting. Yet another chance for me to learn something from folks in the forum, Bob Bone

Don't use the rewire as its way to glitchy in sonar, the best way is within sonar select the channels fl studio is loaded into you want to record and "Bounce to tracks" works like a dream.also i recomend within sonar start your tracks one bar ahead,as in start on bar 2,because fl studio tends to miss notes on the first beat but syncs perfectly after that. this is also recommended from the fl studio manual when using it as vsti.

to record midi you have to tell flstudio which midi channels to send to,and when loading fl studio into sonar you need sonar set to receive midi.this can be done within the channel settings in fl studio, you also may need to change a setting within fl studio preferences

Thanks all for your help so far. I've still not managed to work it out yet! I've been tried just recording an audio clip from FLStudio VSTi but can't do that either? When I click play - in Sonar - I can hear FLStudio but I can't seem to record what is being played. Anyone?!

Can't help with recording midi from Fl into Sonar, but to answer your latest question, I do know how to record audio: In Sonar, select the region of the FL track you want, click on Tracks, Bounce to Tracks to get the Bounce to Tracks dialog box, then select Tracks in the Source Category, and FL Studio VSTi in the Source Tracks box. By default, this bounces the audio that is playing through the Audio track down to another track This process is quick, and you still have access to the midi inside FL - if you want to make changes, just delete your bounced audio, and repeat the bounce process once you've made any changes inside FL. By the way, I always save the flp file from within FL to make sure I still have that in case something happens to the Sonar file Hope this help

Thanks all, I'm still struggling. Bigdogs - I can't bounce to tracks because there is nothing in the track view of the FLStudio track. Here's what I'm doing. Inserting FLStudio as a VSTi in a "Simple Instrument Track". I go into FLStudio and create a simple beat. When I go back to Sonar and click "Play" I can hear the FLStudio beat being played. However, I can't record what I'm hearing. If I click Record in Sonar, I can again hear the FLStudio beat, but nothing gets recorded? I've tried this in Reaper and when I click record it records the FLStudio beat as audio into the track in Reaper. Anyone else?

Even thought the track is empty, you have to select the region of the track to bounce, otherwise Sonar doesn't know what to bounce. If this doesn't work let me know and I'll take some screenshots showing the process and settings

How about not even bothering using FL Studio if you're going to use it how I'm assuming you're using it? Are you using it to set up quick drum patterns on the Step Sequencer? Here's a quick method I created that should allow you to skip using FL for that purpose: http://screencast.com/t/chXxG2gyivin I used Session Drummer to load my sounds from the Browser. From there I opened up the Step Sequencer and deleted all of the unused rows just to keep things organized. I laid down a simple drum beat, that's it. If that's not similar to what you were intending to do with FL Studio just explain to me what you're trying to do exactly and I'll figure it out for you.

Sonar does not record VSTi without third party help it bounces the audio. The same results most of the time just different method. Just in case you did not understand the directions given: select the instrument track and then left mouse on the timeline and drag your mouse across the timeline this selects the range that will be bounced when there is no midi in sonar. You can figure this out by just playing your song and look to where it ends in the timeline. The timeline will be highlighted choose bounce to track from the 'track' drop down menu located just above the track pane and to the left of the timeline and audio will be bounced to what ever track you select. I haven't used FL Studio in a while, back around sonar 3, 4 or 5 rewire worked fine for me.
