Using Onboard Sound Card to test something.

Hi there

I've been trying to use my Realtek AC97 onboard sound card as an output in order to test something. However, it is not showing up as an output for any tracks in ASIO. I'm not having much luck with WDM or MME either.

It is showing up as input and output options in WDM but tracks just won't play.

Can someone please tell me step by step what I should be doing to do this as I think I may be missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

realteak don't have asio based drivers.. so try your luck with asio4all.. although it's not a cast iron guarantee it will work.

so try in WDM mode I guess, but getting a decent sound card would be the best / easiest option.

so if your saying your using asio, unless it's asoi4all then I can't see how u are. If your using asio4all maybe it's causing issues with the existing drivers or isn't setup correctly. The latency on WDM / MME might also be rather large also and that is a none starter.

    Thanks for that Fog

Yahoooo....I've just managed to get it going in MME, albeit that it is a bit crackly. This'll do for now as my intentions are to merely test a UAD2 card in my only PCIe slot which my RME usually occupies.

I wasn't using ASIO4all. I wasn't actually using anything.I just had my driver mode set to ASIO. The drivers for realtek weren't showing in the drivers section of the Audio panel, nor were they in the list of available inputs and outputs.

Hopefully I'll test the card tomorrow. It's a bit here just now (1.03am). Need to work to pay for gear...lol

    Thanks again

ok.. well with asio.. u know you only can select ONE card...

there are plenty of UAD owners here, I'm guessing they use WDM etc. Ed uses a UAD2 also and plenty more preach about it *runs away.. AND I don't even own a guitar either!!! hehe*

don't mention RME to me, they have I card that I want and it's a YEAR overdue

in your audio > advanced... see what's ticked.. remember asio mode uses 1.. so if I have 2 asio based cards it , it will only use 1..e.g. I have my ozone for my laptop, but a 1010LT in the same machine.. if you untick one you can tick the other..

When you select a driver type eg. ASIO, WDM/KS, MME, SONAR will only show what drivers are available for that type. Realtec doesn't have any ASIO drivers so that'a why none showup on the Drivers Tab.

Realtec's WDM drivers are fairly poor so your best bet is always MME for onboard soundcards. Unfortunately that means that latency for live inpout monitoring will be an issue as will having many tracks.

zip, I use mine all the time. Here's how to make it work. You need to be in WDM mode for starters...as the others mentioned, asio doesn't exist for that card. Once you have it in wdm mode, you need to use even numbers on your latency slider bar to hear sound. For example, the lowest you'll be able to get is 20ms. From there, if you want to increase latency, 40ms is the next stop, then 60, then 80 and then where I am at 100. I've even gotten a few numbers in between the ones I've listed, but it has to be an even number for the card to work and not motorboat. Here is how and why I use it..

I use a mixing console so I don't need to use direct input monitoring so latency is not something I worry about. So I go with WDM, 2 buffers and 100ms on the slider bar. I have the Realtek input disabled in Sonar because I only want the output to play back. I do this so I can hear it on my pc speakers in a more consumer environment, so to speak. I wouldn't want to record with it anyway because the converters deliver the sound of azz wrapped up with a nice lil bow....and God knows, we sure don't want that present. :) But it's good for me for monitoring purposes and I can toggle between it and all the other speakers I have in my studio.

For example, if you look at my console view here, look at my master bus section. See where it says "Mast" bus and is reading "A7" on top? When I select that output, it sends to my A7's which are routed through a Layla out and I created a bus for it. When I select the NS-10 output in the master bus, it sends to them which is set up the same way. When I select Realtek out in that bus, the Realtek plays through my Altec Lansing pc speakers. It's good for monitoring purposes, but you CAN record with it if you wish. It just may sound a little harsh due to the converters.

    Hey there

Thanks ever so much for your help. I tried everything you all suggested with the advice and steered clear of ASIO for my Realtek. I eventually got things going with MME with the latency set to 60ms. It at least enabled me to test out my UAD2 Card which worked a treat. Ooooo and they have a sale on.

Thanks again for all your help. Your info was much appreciated.
