Using QWERTY to Control Soft-synths

I know this sounds LAME but, until I decide which midi controler to buy, I want to use the computer keyboard to control the soft-synths.

Is this do-able?

I remember doing something like this one time. It may have just been a program for midi keyboards or something like that. Maybe Band In A Box. But I deffinately played notes with my QWERTY keyboard. It was laid out like a piano keyboard.
