Using SI Bass without keyboard?
I can drag and drop pre made bass patterns in ok and flag the chord changes but wondered how to "play" the bass with the mouse real time while recording? Just arming the track and playing doesn't seem to "take"

you use a midi keyboard or you can draw notes into the PRV using the mouse.. make sure it's got a preset for sound , as some cake synths load up without a sound chosen. set the input midi wise to omni to see if it's setup IF your using a midi keyboard.

Well, you can also use the Step Sequencer and the mouse. The SI_Bass happens to load up a reasonable Default sound. Back in a couple, Bob Bone

I don't have a midi keyboard as yet (On order in fact "Your Amazon.com order of "Alesis QX25 25-Key Advance..." has shipped!) I've never used the Step Sequencer yet ..so here comes another learning curve..Alright!! A man can never have enough tools.

I found it easier to use the PRV for pitched instruments, you might want to compare it with the step sequencer and see which method is best for you. Step sequencer is great for me doing drums.

I just recently programmed a complete bass track for a song using the PRV. Just click on the right note pane and drag the note to the length of the note you want. Very simple to do. I usually use a keyboard and play it real time...but you can make a good track in PRV.

Thank you SOOOOO much guys for jumping in on this post. I am trying to help like 3 or 4 different folks, and have been working with one guy from Europe for about 2 hours now. At quick glance ANY of those methods will get you going. If you want to try the Step Sequencer, I can walk you through some nuances of that - not tricky just ways to speed up the process. Bob Bone

Keyboard is definitely the easiest way to go (for me anyway), before I had MIDI keyboard I used Piano Roll View -- intuitive & straightforward to use. Just takes a lot longer than direct input with keyboard. (I still go back to PRV and edit to touch up my keyboard input.)

Guess I'd better find a video on it. So far I got the view up and put in some notes but they are all boring quarter notes of equal value. So next is to find how to build in some groove and expression stuff. Cool tho.

For the expression.. much easier to wait for your new midi keyboard :) ..meanwhile you can try to re-draw the velocity at PRV.. I think X2 makes it much easier. And for your 4th bar, could it be out of the instrument range ?

If you are fast with your DR880 to program bass, you may want to finish it with the DR, then midi sync and record it to Sonar.

Huh. I never thought of that. I'll have to look into it. I have always just used it for drum and bass audio only.

I have done that to myself too - testing to see if things work, I forget that instruments like bass cannot seem to play in the ultrasonic frequency range - DOH! Bob Bone
