Using SONAR Take Lanes Like Pro Tools Playlist

Though I'd never considered it, couldn't SONAR's Take Lanes be used for more that comping takes? I'm taking a video mixing course and the instructor is using Pro Tools. He mentioned that he uses Pro Tools Playlist to manage mix versions. It looks like Playlist is the tool used in Pro Tools to manage and comp takes during recording. However, it also appears that, at least some people use them for managing track versions during editing and mix versions during mixing. I haven't tried it yet, but it appears to me that SONAR's Take Lanes could be used in a similar way, though I think it would be a pretty manual process for everything except comping.
 
Is anyone doing this? If yes, do you have any suggestions on using take lanes for editing and mixing?
