Using Sonar with a home server

Hi all,

I've recently been thinking about building a home server with a RAID array in it, anyone else using Sonar in a computer network storing samples on a server?

That's how we're set up where I work. I let the IT dept. handle all the server issues. You have to make sure you've got low-latency gigabit networking hardware if you want fast loading times. The raw bandwidth doesn't seem to be as big a factor as network latency. Back in the day we had started out with 100mbit, and performance was acceptable. When we installed Gigabit, performance went down even though raw throughput was increased. It took the IT dept a while to figure out the bottlenecks.

If you're just on a home network and not going through multiple (or any?) switches then you should be fine.

It likely will be slower accessing data on the network server than direct from a hard drive in the PC.  With a DAW (e.g. a PC with Sonar) data access time can be an issue and the reason most recommend 7200 rpm hard drives, for example.  You start slowing it down via a network link, even a local home network link, and there could be issues.

I'm an "old time" Network Manager (Retired) and used to be Novell Netware "certified network engineer".  Data access from a server for most applications is not normally as critical, for speed, in a commerical network.

You should be OK if you are only keeping your sample and sound libraries there. Personally, I would not directly work off of projects stored on NAS or servers. What level of RAID are you talking about? If you want to work off the server for consolidated backup or shared access, there are a lot of ways of doing source control/replication so you are touching the files locally...just don't use VSS!

I have a WHS system, havent used it for getting my samples though. But good idea, I'll try that when I have completed my internal LAN :)

I do have the samples stored there for backup purposes, as I also have my DAW there.
The WHS capasity I have is 2TB and also 2 TB for backing up the WHS (it does that itself)

I also built it myself, the only thing you need is a half old computer with a gigabit LAN connection :)
