Using a MIDI controller and VST

My problem appears to be a simple one yet I have not found a solution as yet. I am currently using Sonar LE 8.5 and I have two keyboards midi into the PC via USB. I able able to receive and transmit midi data to and from the instruments successfully for years where the sounds generation source was a physical instrument. I'm now venturing into soft synths and I cannot get my keyboard (RD-300GX) to talk to the loaded VST. I am using Komplete 7 and can use it as a standalone. As a standalone it I can easily control the soft synth, but when I load say Absynth 5 into the vst track view, assign the audio to master, and midi in to the RD300 and the output to the Absynth5-1 that is available and channel to 1, I am unable to control the absynth via the controller (rd300). Nothing fancy like assigning dials or button, just getting the keys to trigger the note in Absynth. PLaying the virtual keyboard using the mouse produces the sound but not via my controller. What can I be doing wrong? I can get the individual pieces to work but not together. Is there a simple video I can follow to setup my controller to work with vst? I've seen a few and followed it step by step but still no luck. btw i am not using ACT. Thanks

What channel is the keyboard transmitting on and what input channel is the MIDI track set to?

Music Creator 2003, MC Pro 24, SONAR Home Studio 6 XL, SONAR  X3e, CbB, Focusrite Saffire, not enough space.
    Everything is better with pie.

Hi Greg, the rd300 is transmitting on channel 1, I have the midi track input set to recieve from the rd300 on channel 1 and the output is set to the VST.  In this case Absynth 5.  The instrument loaded in Absynth 5 is set to recieve on Port A channel 1.  The strange things is that I am recording notes on the midi track even though it is not triggering the VST.  However when I play back what I just recorded.  It plays the VST.  Thanks for responding

Thanks Greg for reponding.  I figured it out.  The echo input was off. Since I'm accustomed to sound modules and physical devices as the sound generator,  I had it turned off by globally so as not to double up on the sound.  But for VST I guess you need it.  Thanks again.
