Using a midi pedal to control mute on / off

Hey guys, a simple question for you all. 

I have a midi expression pedal plugged into the vstudio and have set it to automate the muting of a specific track - my talk back mic, which is set to input monitoring on. 

Right now, I have to press the foot pedal all the way down to trigger the mute off and then all the way back up and back down to trigger the mute on again.

I'm wondering if there is an easy way to make it so while I hold the pedal down the track is unmuted and then when I let off it's muted again - just like a normal talk back button.

    I don't know anything about the vstudio, but when I use remote control and learn for my foot pedal (using CC11) I get the behaviour you're after, except that pressing the pedal down mutes it and lifting the pedal unmutes. What method do you use to link your pedal to the mute button?

    I'm right clicking on the mute -> remote control -> midi learn
