Using a single instance of a VSTi synth in Project 5?

Since I'm new to P5 I wondered if anyone could guide me in the right direction I have Proteus X and like to use a number of its presets. In Sonar 4, I just create a single instance of VST Proteus X. It has 32 midi channels with a different instrument assigned to each channel and all channels can be used simultaneously. When I want to play multiple instruments on multiple tracks, all I have to do is use the single instance of Proteus X and simply assign a different midi channel to each track. Theoretically I can get 32 tracks of midi from a single instance of Proteus X. I can't seem to figure out a way to do this in P5. I keep having to greate a seperate instance of Proteus X for each track. Obviously, every instance I create simply uses a lot of extra resources that would not be used if I could use a single instance like I do in Sonar. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Lou, in a multitimbral synth, you first have to Enable [Un-Bypass] all of the outputs in the Track Inspector [directly or right-click menu]. Only the first output is ever enabled by default for CPU conservation. The you can increment through the Active Outputs [in two ways], changing the parameters in each output-specific Track Inspector that pops up, including the MIDI channel.

I've never used a synth with more than 16 outputs in P5, so there may be additional effort to access 17-32. That usually falls under a separate 'port' scheme in hardware to avoid conflicting with the MIDI protocol. I'd be interested if you posted how that all comes about.

If you want detail, you can add 31 Track Layers to the original track, and have your parameters accessible in that way and visible at a glance. Let me know if this does it for you, or if I should reply in more detail. HTH

Thanks b rock. I'll see if I can figure out how to make this work from your instructions and report back. Note that when I mentioned the 32 tracks I used the word "theoretically." Proteus X is no light weight when it comes to CPU resources and I would run out of CPU power long before I reached 32 tracks. I can try simply using a few instruments in channels 1-16 and 17-32 simultaneously, but you are right in assuming that if I was doing midi input and not just playback, I would need a second midi port. I'm not sure what will happen with just playback. I'll give it a try and see. Thanks for the help!

Well, I'm still having a problem. I can select the send to (select channel for multitimbral instrument) in the track view just fine, but the problem is, I have to actually create the instrument. I don't want to create a new instrument. I want to use an instance of one that already exists in a previous track. What am I missing here?

You need to right click on the VSTi and add a Layer for each midi channel you want to add. Check out the help file for "layers". I do this all the time with the TT1. Once you get the hang of it, it's fast and works well.

BTW: Using Proteus X as a VST allows only 16 channels if I am not mistaken. Only standalone mode allows 32 channels.

Hey everyone, thanks for the information that pointed me in the right direction. I've got the picture now. The "add layers" is what I was missing.

    Tanks again for your help!
