Using an iPad to control Sonar - What's your favorite?
I need to get an iPad controller for a self tracking project. I've been looking at the options and I'm a bit overwhelmed. If you're using your iPad as a controller, can you please comment with which app you're using and what you like or don't like about it?
Thanks, Seth

Currently using V-Control Pro by Neyricnk. There are lots of controller apps and most are some incarnation of the Mackie HUI protocol. The thing that sets V-Control Pro apart is the V-Window. In addition to the Mackie Controller style mixer interface, Neyrinck adds essentially a virtual desktop feature that allows you to navigate through your 'in focus' Sonar window as you normally on your computer screen with extremely low latency. This allows you to 'visually navigate' through your project in addition to the normal Mackie HUI controls. Thats pretty handy when your in the ISO booth or behind a complex drum setup and you don't want to jump up to re-position Sonar. All the regular stuff the other apps do can be done from the regular mixer window, Arm, Solo, Mute, Pan, Volume, ect. Downside, like all things that don't suck, its 50 bucks. I will say its the one app that I don't regret buying however. Worth a look for sure: http://www.neyrinck.com/v...-pro-sonar#menuTopjump

I use AC-7 Core HD.
It gives you access to important controls like transport, MSR, pan, volume, etc. You also get feedback from Sonar, such as volume. Setup is a bit of a pain.
And it's only a fiver.
Having said that, I tend to use my wireless keyboard for most stuff when tracking. That cost me nothing extra.

+1 on AC-7 Core. It is finicky though and handshaking is a bit of a pain. (The recent posted fix to MackieControl.dll seems to have helped in this respect). For a lot less fuss, (and free) - I also use splashtop. http://www.splashtop.com/personal which was suggested by one of the bakers recently. it'll display at the PC's resolution but it's less workable in this mode - normally I force the PC's main monitor to drop down to 1024 x 768 in splashtop, so I set up a screenset in SONAR on my main monitor just for this, then load up splashtop and I get a perfect representation of that screen on my iPad. Slick. The downside for all of these apps is that you need an active WiFi connection with your DAW, which a lot of people frown on. I rarely/never(?) have an issue keeping my WiFi connection active - just keep my browser closed.

I tried a few of these apps a year ago or so and seem to remember that I had issues with some external software that needed to be installed in order to have the midi port open to the network (RTP Midi, a virtual midi port). What I'd really like to have a check box in sonar that says "use mobile app for remote control". Turn the ipad app on, and have it find and configure itself to control Sonar. (Much like Mackie, line 6, and presonus have for their new line of digital mixers, and DAW software.)

I started down this path but realized I was more hassle than it was worth. I suppose it's still handy if you are recording in a different room to the computer. These days I use a HP Envy touchscreen laptop. Ben

I also use V-Control Pro and it serves me pretty well. Being a synth guy, I also have Lemur and there seem to be a couple of Mackie HUI based control templates for it. I haven't tried them though. What really sets V-Control apart is that you can open and see the familiar Sonar screen, even if navigating around a hi-res desktop is a bit of a pain. You could never do that with Lemur. Lemur rules for entirely different reasons though! ;)

I don't know how you'll get away from this - the fact you are using a generic iOS device as a control surface via wifi pretty much guarantees the need for a virtual wireless midi port. Might be able to build it in to the app to make it "friendlier" - however what I have seen of V- Control Pro seems to be far less kludgy than Ac-7 (which I use and which nonetheless works).

I have both V-Control and AC-7, the former won't work on older wi-fi routers that use old protocols and the latter is frustrating sometimes when trying to handshake.
That said, of the two, its definately V-Control for me, now i've changed router.

I've tried and abandoned both vcontrol and ac7. For me, apart from the ability to press Record away from the desk, it's a solution looking for a problem. Certainly, for any serious mixing work, I find the whole paradigm un-useful.

That's kind of why I'm hoping that the bakers come up with an app and a new protocol. Just abandon the entire Midi control thing for this type of setup. As long as the app and the DAW can both see each other over the network then there should be a much better way for them to communicate with each other. (even if it needs to be written from scratch)

I like V-Control Pro, but believe it or not, for controlling the transport and arming/disarming tracks for record/mute, etc. - I'm still using the trusty ol' Frontier Tranzport!
I paid the $50 thinking V-Control Pro would allow me to control my headphone sends via Sonar's busses, but alas, it does not have the ability of scrolling down several sends within a track...
In desktop mode you can see the top two sends, but there is no way to scroll down to see the others.
Think of being behind the drums, recording your digital kit, a bass guitar, an electric guitar, and a harmonica (all direct), and one mic for guide vocals.
The bass player wants more kick and less harmonica, so you get up, walk over to your PC, adjust the buss sends accordingly and sit back down behind the kit.
Now just as you sit down, the guitarist/lead vocal would like more bass...
This balancing act goes on for a while until everyone is dialed in for the song we're working on.
It would be utterly fantastic to be able to adjust those headphone sends from out at the kit.
If anyone knows of an iPad app that will allow me to scroll the sends, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!
For that matter - it'd be great to be able to use the mouse wheel in Sonar to scroll up and down the sends! (Maybe when that happens, V-Control Pro will be able to do it as well.)
In the mean time, I guess I'm getting my much-needed exercise in!

V-Control Pro. Without a doubt, one of the best purchases I've made in years. It's even more bang for the buck if you also use other DAWs (e.g., PT, Cubase, Logic). Lemur is nice as well, but much higher maintenance IME and works far better as a MIDI controller or custom templates than as a control surface.

Search the App Store for "Microsoft Remote Desktop". There are 2 or 3 free apps that allow you to connect to a Windows computer using Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol, which is a pretty low-resource way of seeing the screen of your DAW on your iDevice (rather than a control surface emulation).

Splashtop - http://www.splashtop.com/personalFree, Remote Access Application to your PC. Works wonderfully. Forget control surfaces, this gives you access to your SONAR display - just recommend judicious use of Screensets to make it work more effectively on the smaller iPad screen. Perfect for not only controlling but seeing what's happening in SONAR when you are recording remote from the DAW.

One more vote for Cakewalk to build a remote app! It seems that more and more DAW makers are doing it and, it only makes sense, to me.
