Using external effects with Tascam FW-1884 and Sonar

Hello troops, I can't for the life of me work out how to use external effects with my FW-1884. I want to route existing sounds out of sonar to external effects then back in and hear it while I'm doing it.  Anybody have any experience with that?

Assuming 1/2 are routed to your monitors, you have 6 more potential outputs. Pick one(or a pair) and send your signal out. Run it thru the effect and bring it back in. Make sure “input echo” is on for the return track.
    That should do it.
