Using live input instead of samples

I'm just getting into using my new Sonar X2 Producer after having lived a long time with Kinetic and Audacity. Let's just say the difference is enormous... I was playing around with Dimension Pro, just using the basic vocal "aaah" sample to generate a large choir in a concert hall, well sort of, when it occured to me that it would be really nice if I could use my own voice instead of the sampled one. I know I could make a bunch of samples and use those, but is there any way to feed live audio into one of the sythesizers instead ? And I'd really like to use my sustain pedal as well to just lock the input at whatever is currently happening, just like when using a sample. I'm not sure what I'm asking makes any kind of sense or not. Maybe I could get close using a bunch of effects but it would be nice to use a synth interface in real time and get to use all the waveshaping functionality.

There are hardware sampler machines that can do some of that, if I'm getting what you are saying.  But none of the Cakewalk synths.
