Using multiple synths.

Hey folks. I think I'm missing something. I've tried, unsuccessfully to add 2 soft synths, True Pianos and SI String Section to a song. I can only get one of them to work. I've tried both cloning the original MIDI track and copying it to a new track then sending each output to its respective synth. I must be messing up something in the properties page. Using SONAR X1d. Thanks! Dave

Have you checked each synth's output to make sure it is going to a good out?

So you have the output of the midi tracks going to the synths, but you do not list any audio track assignments to pick up the synth outputs and then route them to a buss (master).

How did you insert the synths into Sonar.

Let's sort the basics out and the rest should straight forward.

By far the best way is to simply drag the synth from the Browser into Track View, when the "Insert Synth Options" page opens, (if it doesn't, click the "Insert Synth Options" in the browser and check "Ask This Every Time") make sure ONLY "Midi Source" and "First Synth Audio Output" are checked.

Now route both of the AUDIO  track's output to your master bus. You do have a master bus yes? If not, go and create one.

Record/Type in some Midi and you're good to go.

You might want to enable Input Echo on each of the Midi tracks to hear everything, though it's not always necessary.

OK here's what I've tried this time. (Can't print screen for some reason) I have a MIDI part that I've cloned. The original MIDI trk I sent to True Pianos and it added 2 tracks, one with a small MIDI and the larger keyboard icon, and one with only the MIDI icon. That track works. o/p of 1st MIDI to True Pianos -> 1st added trk i/p "true pianos" o/p to an INST BUSS -> 2nd added trk i/p "none", o/p "True Pianos". Cloned MIDI track goes through the same chain using SI String Section. This one doesn't work. Trying to route the original MIDI trk to string section doesn't work either. If I delete the True Pianos I can get the String Section to work. Not a MIDI-type guy by any stretch. Thanks!

Using multiple instances of "the same synth" can have different problems than using two different synths. It's a memory address and scheduling conflict probably. Two different patchs of the same synth will still use the same synth engine, sometimes. so they both ask the CPU and scheduler and memory for the same resources. Some synths are built with different resource requests per channel. Some are not.

Since when are True Pianos and SI String Section the same synth?

That doesn't sound right, but I don't really understand what you're trying to say.

Just clone the original MIDI track to another MIDI track.
    Add two softsynths.
Point output of MIDI track 1 to softsynth 1 and output of MIDI track 2 to softsynth 2.

You shouldn't have to mess with the outputs of the softsynth tracks.

By all means, clear this up.
