Utter novice needs mic setup help.

this is my first attempt at using forums, so forgive me if i'm missing any etiquette that says you have to know somewhat what your doing.
I'm trying to set up my Rode NT1-A Mic to record vocals on Sonar 7.  But apparently it's not as easy as plugging it in and singing (I know there are people shaking their heads and rolling their eyes.  I'm probably missing something super obvious).  Anyway, I have it plugged into my Tascam US-122L Audio Interface and can hear what the mic's picking up without recording.  But when I record and play it back, it sounds like a blender.  I called Long & Macquade and they said it might be the "buffer size", so i set the buffer size to the middle setting, like they suggested, and I hear my voice, except it's transposed down an octave... I can't make heads or tails out of it.

Well if the vox is transposed down an octave then there is probably a mismatch between recording rates (or that is the first thing that comes to mind).

I don't know nothing about the Tascam unit but in SONAR you have to have everything on every page set up under Options>Audio.  There are several pages and make sure the same driver is picked out on each.  The 1st page has the rate and bit depth as well as recording timer.  Make sure the timing for recording and playback is your Tascam drivers and not the onboard soundcard.  It shouldn't be different, but sh ... stuff happens.

The 2nd page (I forget the name) has the drivers themselves, I think.  make sure the Tascam is picked, along w/ ASIO or WDM flavor.  Either should work but one will probably work better - though that shouldn't be a priority at this point.

Go ahead and fool w/ those, read the pop up help menu and check your Tascam manual.  There might be a trick there, and there should be  tascam software that installs, too, for controlling the hardware (and mixing w/in the hardware, etc).  My TC unit here at home has software for a bunch of hardware related things - which usually translates automatically to SONAR but there can be snafus.

finally, check the tascam forum and see if someone else has had a similar problem and the fix if they did.

Ha! Not many rules of etiquette enforced here, Konrad. Heck, we barely enforce the rule that says you have to know something before you can ANSWER a question! There are certainly no prerequisites for asking one.

AT has the right answer, I think. If the SONAR project is set up for 44.1KHz, make sure the Tascam is, too.

+1 ... and as per AT.  Welcome!

    Go to options\audio\drivers.

You may have a driver choice (for testing):  MME is usually the worst choice for me, but your computer may also have this added midieval MME sound-card to toy with.

But the Tascam sound-card probably uses only WME and/or ASIO drivers (much better) ... as in their docs.

Hey! Please reply back.  I'm sure we'll be able to help.

Thanks for the advice! It works now! :D It ended up being the Driver mode. it was set to WDS, so I changed it to ASIO and it worked!  What does "Driver mode" mean anyway? how come that distorted the sound?
(anyway, Philip, me and the wife prayed about it this morning, so it's an answer to prayer.  And now we can finally start recording our first CD :D)

Drivers are the little bits of software used to connect hardware to the computer.` The driver mode in this case means the standard used - mme was an old microsoft standard for beeping soundcards last century (wow, it feels weird saying that).  WDM was an improved driver and still used for playing music via the computer, while ASIO was a Stienberg invention for more pro standards. WDS is the latest from MS?  Your music was distorted since the software wasn't connecting very well w/ the hardware - probably the kHz rate got messed up.

    good luck w/ the Cd.

me and the wife prayed about it this morning, so it's an answer to prayer

Whenever I have a technical challenge, I like to slay a chicken under a full moon. It doesn't seem to actually help, but it keeps the neighbors talking.

    Welcome to the forum, Konrad.
