V Studio 100 and Windows 7

Apologies if this has been answered before but I couldn't find this on the forums.

I've just purchased a V-Studio 100 and I'm trying to install it onto a Windows 7, 64-bit system. The disk that came with the unit only has Vista and XP drivers so, naturally, the PC was unable to install the unit as it couldn't locate the drivers. No problem, I head over to the support / downloads page to get the Windows 7 v2.0 drivers but I first need to download the v. 1.50 firmware update (my unit is showing version 1.20). Downloaded this and followed the instructions to run the "UpdSMF" folder. In the dropdown "Midi out" device list, it's supposed to show the VS-100 but only shows my USB keyboard and the MS Wavetable synth so I can't complete the installation (presumably the VS-100 isn't showing in the drop down list because it hasn't installed properly? It is showing as a device in "My Computer", albeit that it hasn't been installed correctly). I've tried installing a previous version of the drivers (v1.0) to see if that works but the ".dat" file mentioned in the installation instructions isn't there and I've also tried updating the firmware via an SD card but, again, the "SDUpdate" folder referred to in the firmware update instructions isn't there either.

Presumably / hopefully others on W7 64 bit have come up with the same issues so hopefully some kindly soul out there can lead me through a step by step installation so I can get this darn thing to work.

many thanks

hi tylermob, make sure the 1.50 firmware update is installed prior to installing the 2.0 drivers, it won't work otherwise. also, this thread might help: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2303041

thanks for the reply M@ B.

Unfortunately, I can't even get to the point to install the 1.50 firmware update as the VS100 isn't showing up in the dropdown list of destination I/O's to send the update software to. It's almost like I need the drivers to install the VS100 onto the PC before I can update the firmware but can't install the drivers until I've updated the firmware...etc etc. Haven't got to the point yet of updating the control surface software / drivers but from what I can tell, as I have X1 Producer, I don't think I need to do that.

Not sure how I get around this one, may keep plugging away to see if I get lucky before going back to Cake support as a last resort but thanks for your help anyway!

Tyler: Plse look in the sister-thread of mine here http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2400779. X1 with win7 x64 works flawless with X1 (and Reaper) with my old Audiophile 2496. With VS-100 now boots properly, after shifting VS to another USB connector, but in X1 (and Reaper) it freezes the whole system. Today I will buy a USB-pci card (~USD 15) and check if using other buses handle the card differently. I will also test VS-100 on my Acer minicomputer and see how/if it works there. The link to the other thread, where someone made adjustments in Safe Mode was new to me and I will also check that.  With Sonar 8.53 in XP VS-100 worked perfectly.

edit: Just want to comment on my own trials and (t)error: CakAlex advice on VS-100 connection with a USB-pci card did the trick! Works very well now.

thanks for the reply, equality. Have now managed to get the VS100 to work by manually "forcing" the PC to load an earlier driver. Once that was in, bingo - I could then load the firmware update and load the latest drivers too.

All seems well with the VS100 - it's going to take a bit of time to get used to not automatically reaching for the mouse and using the VS100 instead but no doubt that will come in time!

    thanks again
