VH1s Classic Albums - Any Other Shows Like It?
Hello I watched the making of Deep Purple's Machine Head recently. I have seen Queen's Night at the Opera, Steely Dan's Royal Scam (maybe - I forgot which ones). DSOTM. The recording nerd side of me wants it to be deeper, but I have not found any other shows that try to explain how a sound was captured or a mix created. Do you know of any others? Thanks Goodbye
Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad. 2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1. More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent. Zendrum!!!

If it's the same series I'm thinking about, here's the full list Space - some (possibly all?) of them are available on DVD and contain extra footage not shown on the TV shows. The Band - The Band Bob Marley & The Wailers - Catch a Fire Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet Cream - Disraeli Gears Deep Purple - Machine Head Def Leppard - Hysteria The Doors - The Doors Duran Duran - Rio Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley Fleetwood Mac - Rumours Frank Zappa - Apostrophe (') / Over-Nite Sensation Grateful Dead - Anthem of the Sun and American Beauty Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland John Lennon - John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band Judas Priest - British Steel Lou Reed - Transformer Meat Loaf - Bat out of Hell Metallica - Metallica Motörhead - Ace Of Spades Nirvana - Nevermind Paul Simon - Graceland Phil Collins - Face Value Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon Queen - A Night at the Opera Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks Simply Red - Stars Steely Dan - Aja Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life U2 - The Joshua Tree The Who - Who's Next I have four of the DVD's (Pistols, Priest, Maiden, Floyd) - the studio footage on the Dark Side Of The Moon is incredible! HTH Steve Edit: The series is called "Classic Albums; The Making Of..."

I have the U2 - The Joshua Tree DVD. It's pretty awesome. If the rest are the same quality, they're WELL worth buying! Edit: I think i saw the Sex Pistols one too. If I remember correctly, it had Quincy Jones admiring Steve Jones' guitar work.

Sounds like I have found my birthday present for next month. I have seen the DSOTM, Aja (couldnt remember the SD LP), Machine Head... but there are a lot of other good choices in there too. I wish there was another program of this type on. I guess we are too much of a niche market.

Unfortunately... they're not going to go too deep into the actual recording techniques beyond what they think the average watcher would be interested in seeing. Since we are not the average watcher... it's not as detailed as we'd like them to be.

I would be happy if there were at least more of the shows - covering some other styles perhaps as long as it was not rap. I cannot imagine one of those being very long.
