VIKINGS...

I don't know if you can get this in England or Norway (or other places) but I thought I'd post it. It is the new series on The History Channel: The Vikings. It is quite good IMO. There are 4 episodes you can watch online (the first 4) and they have it so that you can watch next weeks TV episode online. E-4 airs Sunday night at 10:00 EDT. Anyway, I like it... of course since they are Vikings there is violence, some sexual situations, etc.
Maybe some of your forefathers Marius. I would be proud of them, were I you.

I actually have been wanting to watch this.  I have also heard that it is really good.  Right before my Grandmother passed away at 87, she handed me a pretty extensive genealogy.  As she pointed back through the ancestors, she said, "here is where they change our last name....it is said that we were descendants of Vikings."

Of course grandma said it like it was not to be mentioned in the wrong company.  I thought it was kind of cool.

Heck, be proud and loud. I am proud of all the great great grandfathers of mine who were in the Confederate army, one was elected 2nd Lt. I don't hold with slavery, not in the least, but I am proud of my southern heritage. There is always enough blame to go around regarding anything in this world. In the 19th and early 20th centuries people were REALLY hushed about any native American heritage, but really, it is all just stupid. I say be proud of where you came from and do the best you can to be the best YOU that you can be. I try and usually fail but I'd be proud to have Viking heritage. I know for certain that I am descended from "legitimized bastards" from John of Gaunt and Katherine, also descended from Cunedda Wledig, probably close to the same thing. My parents are the age of most people's grandparents and I know how important "image" was t them back in the 50s and 60s. I'm sure I cured them of that though, lol. So I understand where your grandma was coming from. People used to be real bigots. (Not your G'ma.. but she knew how the world worked). This world is what it is...

It really is a great show, it makes you wish you were born into a less civilized time, it does me anyway. I have an idea that I wouldn't feel that way if it were so.

I made my life much easier several years ago by skipping all tv-series with a continuing story.
I made the decision watching 5th or 6th episode of  "Lost", when I learned there was a second season coming and a third being planned.

I saw some trailers of the Vikings and got sceptic, but it doesn't matter, 'cause I'll not watch it.

The vikings were a really interesting and fascinating slice of history. They were so much more than just bandits, even though they were also bandits. Well, most nations/tribes/peoples were bandits whenever they went abroad those days.

Had there been a camera attached to the mast of some of those boats!!!

Continuing stories are best watched after they're all done as one big DVD pack.  I HATE having to wait a week for the next installment...

So I tend to not watch them either.

The funny thing is that I am originally from Minnesota as well.  Truly a Viking by all standards I guess.  I think they missed their shots at the Super Bowl in the Bud Grant years.  I don't see it in their near future.

I thought it was going to be this BBC2 documentary series by Neil Oliver.

I watched all three episodes back to back on an Emirates flight. Facinating stuff. I was unaware of the extent of their influence in  Russia and Turkey. The name Russia apparently comes form the Norse word for Men who row.

    Re:VIKINGS... 2013/03/23 01:21:35 (permalink)
Vikings is nicely done.  No CGI boat, for one.

Ragnar Lothbrok is a historical figure, tho with a lot of myth attached.  Bunch of books written about him - "the Vikings" for one.  Hollywood movie, too.  More recently Bernard Cornwell has a series going which is very good if you like historical fiction.

TV - and a continuing series, are as good as anything if done well.  Most of it is tripe, and just does the same thing over and over.  "I Love Lucy" is really well written and fresh, if you grew up on it.  But they've been doing the same situational comedy for over 50 years and you wouldn't know it was fresh if you saw it now.  Screwball wife is old hat now.

My theory is that there can be only one - really funny show on at a time.  Sat. Night Life was funny - outstanding stuff, in the 70s.  Then we got Python, later than our English friends, but the local Dallas PBS station was the first to broadcast it in the US.  Yea haw, cutting edge.  The Simpsons, Married w/ Children and then I gave up network TV pretty much.  But even when I take a peek there is only one funny show - SouthPark gives way to Robot Chicken.

They Vikings is good - great acting, good writing (tho the Jarl is only carried by Gabrial Byrne, not what is on the page), a developed history behind it.  And there hasn't even been much fighting yet...

A couple of things I've learned from the Vikings series is that Viking women look like Victoria's Secret models and when they're trying to seduce you, they will expose a perfectly shaved leg without a single nick.
