I saw that. Wonder what the use case is, or advantages are, if you already use a DAW to host all your plugins? It would seem plugin developers may still need to develop custom plugin maps for enhanced VIP integration. And you may still need to use MIDI learn. Maybe this is geared more to live performance, or DJ style kits? And I see "...with your VIP compatible keyboard..." mentioned several times in the description. Is this a NKS clone? I noticed AKAI has some fancy new Advance keyboards all ready for VIP...

It has it's uses as sometimes I get stuck on what exact instrument I need to get the sound I want and using the Advance keyboard to literally flick through instruments and pre-sets quickly improves my workflow before I've lost the spark.

The use for VIP and Advance keyboards would be very similar to NI Komplete Kontrol. One place for you VSTi's with a hardware controller that handles all of your VST's and VSTi's. I have mine set up so volume is always on knob8 all the way to the right. If I'm using AAS Chromophone or NI Massive or AIR Velvet volume is always in the same place. Th VIP keyboards have full function without a comp monitor so could be used live with a laptop. VIP is not a clone of the NKS but serves essentially the same purpose. VIP maps were made by the makers of the software but now it says it is easier for the manufacturers to make their own I guess. I made of few of my own and it's not hard. Just assign parameters to knobs and buttons and save it. VIP is a great place ot make multis and layer things from different companies. And you can insert 4 FX on each multi and there are 4 or 8 busses for send return. All I need to be way happy is to be able to insert VIP into an FX bin without an instrument. When I can do that my Akai becomes a great control surface. I love it now but that would make it close to perfect for me.

VIP 3.0 is also available for the first time ever as a no-charge complimentary upgrade (a $99.99 value) to owners of the following models: Akai Professional: - MPK2 Series.
- MPK Mini Series.
M-Audio: - Code Series.
- Oxygen MK IV Series.
- Axiom AIR Mini 32.
Customers owning these keyboards can download VIP in their user accounts at M-Audio and Akai Pro. In addition, VIP 3.0 is available to 3rd-party keyboards for the first time, for an introductory $99.99 access fee available at Plugin Boutique or Plugivery Dealers. Other notable new features include Pad Chord Progressions and Key Control processors – MIDI centric performance tools, armed with comprehensive articulation controls, that provide the ideal platform to explore new musical possibilities by harmonizing root notes in real-time and playing chord progressions on pads (using either the vast factory library or the user's own fully customizable motifs). Akai say the combination of VIP 3.0 and a compliant controller maximizes workflow and ensures a natural, creative playing experience that fuses the tactile feel of hardware with the processing capability of virtual Instruments. With VIP 3.0, users can enhance the creative capability of any standard MIDI over USB controller thanks to all-new MIDI Learn functionality. Now artists can seamlessly custom map the controls of their MIDI controller (knobs, encoders, faders, buttons) to VIP's parameters, for effortless integration and the enhanced workflow, attributes that owners of the Akai Professional Advance Series, M-Audio's CTRL49 and the Alesis VX49 have long enjoyed. I really like it. One thing I was concerned about when I was research was some people said the action was a bit stiff. This bothered me because as a guitar player I would get a small amount of pain when using my Edirol at times. Just the slight amount of pressure I used still was painful on occasion. I can bang away on a bass or guitar and no problems but I don't want to do anything to put wear on tendons and such. Anyone over 50 knows what I mean. Happy thing is with the Akai the stiffer action may be acting as a shock absorber. That's my theory anyway. I wouldn't know how stiff is stiff on a keyboard it doesn't push hard or need any strength to play. Most my other MIDI boards felt pretty cheap and plastic-y but the Akai seems like a proper piece of Professional gear. 8 big knobs which I like a lot and the big colored pads can be used as mute pads in the mixer. Love the layering with up to 8 separate channels.

Does that Akai Advance enhanced LED screen offer any significant advantages over the simple displays such as those of the Code 49, that also supports VIP.

I haven't seen a good pic of the M-Audio but the Alesis was the same size and looked the same. You wouldn't think the M-Audio would have and 2nd class feature. Look at the M-Audio site and while there see what they are offering for free software. I got a load of AIR Music Tech instruments and the big FX package. There might have been a Sonivox included too.

I went to M-Audio and the screen does look smaller. I don't look at the screen much anyway. Being able to use a full 24" monitor is part of the appeal for me. There must be a video on YouTube so you can see the screen in action.

Yep, I found some demo videos on the Sweetwater site here: https://www.sweetwater.co...dvance49#video-gallery Looks like the Akai Advance screen would let you just go into "hardware" mode and work with your virtual instruments without needing to use your DAW's monitor and the VIP GUI. I guess now I am wondering if you can do all of these same things from the VIP GUI on your DAW monitor, just without the detailed feedback on the keyboard itself? I guess I have always preferred editing on a large screen, rather than the LCD on a keyboard, even back in my Roland rompler days. Back then I upgraded to MIDI Quest to do my patch editing on the PC monitor! It looks like the Code 49 is $200 less than the Advance 49 ($299 vs $499), so if it functions the same in VIP, but without the detailed onboard LED, it might be the bang for the buck!

OK thanks. The Advance looks killer, but I like that the the Code 49 has the sliders and the x-y pad. It also comes in black, in addition to the white case. I already have the full bundle of AIR instruments, so it would be nice to have a universal patch browser for all them, not to mention my other 10,999+ patches (and my 80+ virtual instruments)!

This is all very interesting... I have one main question... Could this potentially make keyswitching simpler? Like having some preset visual cues for where the keyswtiches are? Maybe somehow make the pads do the keyswitches and then even better, have the names of the keyswitches on the little screen so you know which one is going to do what (without memorizing)?

That would be a killer feature, but I don't know if it would exist on this series of keyboards. I have seen some comments from users of Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S-Series that they do have handy visual guides with their Light Guide system for keyswitches, for example when using Komplete instruments, or NKS compatible instruments, but not ordinary VSTi's. Yeah I've been interested in the Kontrol sereis keyboards for that very reason but even on those it doesn't seem to do it as clearly as I'd like... It's like yeah the switches may be lit up a different color but I still don't know which is which without hovering my mouse in Kontakt or reading and memorizing the specific library's manual. Hell what I'd REALLY like is an ipad app (i don't have an ipad but I'd get one haha) where I can just have big clear buttons for each key switch and sit it next to my regular midi keyboard. oh life would be so much better haha

Yep, I agree on that memorizing the keyswitches thing can be a bit of a pain. And it can change from one instrument to the next. If you could customize them so that they were all consistent, maybe you could put some tape above the keys with little sharpie pen icons, lol! That could help until muscle memory kicked in...
