VRM Box - no sound ...
I just hooked up Focusrite VRM Box - I get sound from it outside of Sonar (eg, playig back a song in SoundForge) but iside Sonar, I cannot yet get a sound. I have the S/PDIF from my Ulralite OUT, to the S/PDIF In on the VRM, and hook headphones up to the VRM. The song plays back in Sonar, but I hear nothing. The master OUT in Sonar goes to Focusrite USB ASIO - there is no other choice actually. I imagined it would still send out to the Ultralite ... ...anyway ... has anyone had simialr problems or would know what I have done wrong in set up? Thanks

If you have the VRM hooked to the outs on your MOTU then you'll need to set the outputs of your master to the MOTU. Go to Preferences>Devices and set your playback timing out to the MOTU. That should do it.

I've used my VRM box with both a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and now with a Roland Octa-Capture. As noted whatever device you have the VRM connected to must be the output device in Sonar.

That's what Thought too. But when I go to Edit - Preferences - only the Focusrite is available to choose. The MOTU is greyed out. When I take the S/PDIF out of the VRM, then I get sound. Hmmm ... I guess that means the MOTU is somehow not sending through the S/PDIF OUT? rscain If you have the VRM hooked to the outs on your MOTU then you'll need to set the outputs of your master to the MOTU. VRM is 48 K only, so chances are, in Sonar you may be at a different sample rate. I use spdif from my main Laptop with Sonar, then send spif to the VRM box. I have it tethered USB to another computer to open the VRM GUI for clients to select different rooms to hear on without affecting my main setup. Yeah I was bummed at first about no 44.1.

When using it with SPDIF input, the VRM box can go up to 192KHz. When using as a USB interface the sample rate can be 44.1K or 48K. As others have said, when using the SPDIF input on the VRM box, you will need to set your output of Sonar to the SPDIF outputs of the device your are using to send to the VRM box (in your case the Ultralight). The reason that you cannot select Ultralite is that you have another device selected in the Audio > Devices tab of the Preferences. If you uncheck all of the selections for input and output, you should see all of the greyed out choices become available. Once you select the Ultralite, you will still need to route your outputs to the appropriate selection for the SPDIF outs on the MOTU.

Good point on the routing, Matt. On the Saffire Pro 40 and the Saffire Mix Control Panel it was already set (at least on mine) so I had S/PDIF output on the Saffire Pro 40. But on the Roland Octa-Capture, I had to set that in the Octa-Capture Control Panel to get S/PDIF output.

Thanks for the message - and I managed to finally route to the MOTU ok. But now each time I plug the box in, I get a "USB device not recognised" message ... it worked previously, so no idea why I get this message ... I have a number of other USB devices, all working fine. Any ideas on this one?

Depending on when/how it was disconnected the status may be corrupted in Windows. Plug the unit in and then go to the Device Manager. Look at the USB section and if there is an "unknown device" listed it is probably the VRM box. If this is the case, RIGHT click on the entry to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT check the box to also uninstall the driver. Then disconnect the VRM box and restart the PC. After Windows starts, connect the VRM box and Windows should detect and reinstall it.

Sorry guys to jump into the conversation, but its the only place I found on the net talking about VRM Box in content of Windows 7 64-bit. I have been using my VRM Box with WinXP for awhile, never a problem. Just upgraded to a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (SP1), installed the latest software version from Focusrite website (v1.2 for VRM Box), hooked up the box - it got recognized and led lit up. I can select different speakers types, etc., but there is not sound coming out of my headphones. I uninstall and re-install again, the same. Although I'm using FL Studio, at this point I can not get any audio outside of DAW. Tried playing video clip from YT - no sound, playing a regular mp3 in Media player - it actually halted it until I unplugged the box. I already emailed Focusrite support, and still waiting for reply. Wondering if you guys can kindly recommend me what am I missing? Is there a trick during the install? Or special setting in Win7 x64? I have VRM Box selected as default playback device, but can't hear any sound :( Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. Turned out that the VRM box just won't work from the USB port where it was plugged in, but worked fine from another one ... not sure the reason for that, but seems its up and running now. fireberd Depending on when/how it was disconnected the status may be corrupted in Windows. For me anyway, there is no special trick with Windows 7. My problem was the USB device being not recognised. If you get that OK, and the software is apparently working OK as well, maybe your problem lies in your audio routing. Are you using the box as a stand along audio interface (just the USB connection), or using the S/PDIF connection? If the latter, as it states in the thread above, you need your Master bus routed to your soundcard, and not to the VRM box. twister6 Sorry guys to jump into the conversation, but its the only place I found on the net talking about VRM Box in content of Windows 7 64-bit. Twister6, do you have the S/PDIF port that you are using activated? That is an issue that was noted in an earlier post on this forum. If the device you are using for S/PDIF is not the output device for your DAW, AND if the port is not activated in the device you are using for S/PDIF then there will not be any audio.

ULTRABRA - I'm glad to hear you got the VRM box running happily in your set up. The USB bus on i series chipset motherboards can be a bit finicky once the USB 1.1 device count starts to stack up. This would probably be what you were experiencing. twister6 - please contact Focusrite support: http://www.focusrite.com/answerbase/en/contact.php

Unfoutunately things ae not yet running smoothly with my VRM Box. I noticed I can only get sound through the VRM Box when my soundcard's Master Clock source is set to "internal" (and not S/PDIF). This causes occasional clicks in the audio. When I change the clock source to S/PDIF I get no sound at all.

I get sound out of my VRM box via my M-Audio Fast Track S/PDIF, whether the clock source is set to internal or S/PDIF. It doesn't seem to make any difference and I don't get any audio clicks either way. Have you tried connecting the VRM via USB and bypassing your interface? At least if you still hear the audio clicks, you know it's a problem with your VRM box and nothing to do with S/PDIF or clock sources.

Yes, I can hear sound when I hook up headphones directly to the VRM Box, take away the S/PDIF cable, and set the VRM Box as playback in Windows 7. I find the sound coming that way a little lower in quality - I suppose that is to be expected? I think the sound quality even when it was working via S/PDIF was not that great - the sound to my headphones direct from my Ultralite sounded much better - or maybe I'm just used to that sound ... ??

Mine either had no sound or sound with a dreadful hum. I could not get it to work at all so I sent it back to Sweetwater (this was last year). Got the Focusrite Pro24 DSP with VRM and it worked fine. That little VRM box is sketchy on some systems.

I have a similar problem. All the meters look good and the project is playing but no sound form VRM. Whether hooking up via S/PDIF or using it directly as the X1 interface I'm getting no sound. When I connect to my laptop it works fine. I've re-installed the drives but that didn't help. I guess I'll put a support ticket into Focusrite when I get some time.

Ultrabra- Unless you are clocking to a 3rd device that is feeding clock signal to the MOTU, you will need to have your Ultralite set to clock internally. Setting it to SPDIF will make it clock to the incoming clock on your SPDIF inputs. If you do not have a device sending SPDIF in, the sound card will not have a clock source and you will not get playback. In regards to the clicks and pops, make sure that you are using a proper 75 ohm SPDIF cable as opposed to a run of the mill analog RCA audio cable. Also, check your DPC latency to make sure that the clicks and pops aren't DPC spikes. Here is a useful tool for checking DPC latency: http://thesycon.de/eng/latency_check.shtml VintageVibe- definitely submit a ticket to Focusrite support so that we can get you up and running.
