VS 700 R as soundcard

As of now I use an Edirol UA 25.
I just got the VS 700 system.
Will I just use the VS 700 R as my soundcard for all computer stuff as I have with the Edirol?

Thanks guys.
(I'll probably be bothering you a lot!   )

Keep in mind I don't have a VS 700- yet, but...  Yes.  And, if needed, you can still use the Edirol.  For the purposes of getting started, use only the VS 700 drivers in Sonar- (or, lose the Edirol for now).  (I'm using a RME MultiFace II with an EMU card connected via SPDIF and both communicate- this is how I know).

Steve the VS 700R is in a class by itself and way better than the Edirol. You dont need anything other than the VS700R for all of your IN OUT requirements. You would be better off disconnecting Edirol as it may cause some problems trying to address two audio interfaces. Although it may work there is really no need for it.

I almost just bought the v 700 r, for $1,999.99, but my better judgment made me not buy it, as My sound card still works accept for the annoying pops and cracks,Im going to upgrade to 9 hopefully some of the pops and cracks will be fixed,as I never had any artificial noise in versions 3-6,versions 7 and 8 I started getting pops and cracks ... Plus I'm so against the Fanthom being bundled into a sound card, and thats the main reason I wont buy it because I used the fanthom and I totally dislike it. and refuse to buy something I dont want or need or even wanna pay for it , I was looking at the RME 800 and its $1600, compare to $1900 for the v-700. and its just a sound card ....
Also question if anyone no's this, is the v-700 r compatible with Mac? will the fanthom work in Logic?with the editor, not that I want it but like to know. and is the specs better than the RME 800?
and will CW make the V700 R without the fanthom so that the price will be lower?

Do you use synths in your music and what is not to like about the Fantom? It is a great instrument. I can understand if its audio you mainly work with and you would never have a need for the Fantom. By the way it is fairly agreed that the VS700R sounds better than the RME? So would not the extra be worth that alone?

And if you ever upgrade to the V700C console then you will have the whole system as the console and VS700R are designed to work together as a unit. (Instant recall of the Mic Pre control and direct mixer etc)

OK so how do I set the Fantom to play?
I'm set up and getting signal thru the phones for projects already recorded.
(I need to find my balanced cables for monitors <G>)
Opened up a Midi track assigned the O to Fantom.
    In to Omni.
    Midi channel 1.
I didn't find banks BUY did see the GM patches.
Set one and I get the moving blue meter BUT no sound.
Do I need to set something else?

    Dim Pro plays.

I'm going to try assigning an audio track.

Instant Recall , Direct mixer?  so If I buy the RME 800 and then the v700c as I plan to I will loss features? UT oh...becoming less attractive... I have a bunch of Roland gear allready and I use to love them all about 5 years ago, I been selling all my old gear. I had the jv,1080, 2080, xp-50,alpha juno in rack, super Jup, mc303,all gone I'm into soft synths, that I can load up multiple instance's, with own outs .. whats not to like ? alot the price of the fanthom for 1, the fact its only 1 instance, and it bundled with hardware.. If I want a printer I buy a printer if I want a scanner I buy a scanner if I want a copier or fax I go and buy them, But I dont buy all in one's per say. I want a sound card not a synth...and not a bunch of icing..  so now my thoughts of buying the RME and then the V700C are becoming even slimmer...

Hey Steve, You need to insert a synth track and then select Fantom VS as the instrument. For starters you can select a simple instrument as the type of outs etc. As long as your input is your controller and the output is going to say the Master you will hear it. When you insert Fantom it needs a second or two to establish itself then you are away. You can select the synth rack on the console and insert from there as well. Double click on the little keyboard symbol and you will bring up the editor. Check out the sounds, they are huge!

I would not buy the RME and the V700C console. I was saying if there is any chance of you getting the console, then the VS700R would be the better choice. Several reviews have put it higher up the sound chain than the RME at present. The Mic Pres sound very good too. You can plug very high quality mikes and signals directly to it without the need of a whole of rack mounted Mic Pres.

I used to have a whole lot of hardware as well and got rid of all it too (and I love the Sonar virtual synths) but I am sort of glad the Fantom is there after all. It has turned out to be a nice synth to have around. Does not tax your CPU at all and it has quite extensive effects processing as well. I also have two Kurzweil rack synths as well (now there is another story, nothing can replace those) and they connect up all very well to the VS700R. So Fantom and any high quality external synths can take care of a lot of business all by themselves before you even turn on any virtual synths insdie Sonar. Do you still have any hardware at all?

so How I look at it is E[font="arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: normal; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-weight: bold; "]xpansion Card for Roland Synths with 88-key Piano Samples is $270,Brass Instruments ARX Expansion Board for Fantom-G with Custom Graphic Interface, Solo and Ensemble Sounds, 50 User Memory Locations, and 29 Effect is $449.00, now the 128-Voice Expandable Synthesizer/Sample Playback Module is $1400.00  if you think of the price of these and think if it wasnt even in the v-700r what would the price be? MY point is the Fanthom isnt a cheap piece of hardware its a pretty penny and Roland aint giving it away for free...so building the hardware into the V700r had to cost at least $400 or more... just the sound cards are $300..
do the math... if I wanted a sound card and a fanthom then it would be a great deal. right now were being forced to buy it when it shouldnt be part of a sound card, at all EVER!!! I dont disagree that is a good synth..

You are a bit like me as I am in love with Kurzweil and I know the Nord is also a very good sounding instrument. I can understand why you like it so much. Seems like Fantom would be a good companion for it as well.

You are lucky over there in the US because the VS700R is a lot more expensive here ($3999) AUD which is about $3500 in your terms so if you can get a VS700R for $2000 I would not even think twice.

I'm not familiar with the UA-25. does it have an ADAT out on it? Actually thr VS 700 R is an interface-USB, soundcards are a different beast, but you knew that. I've got sixteen channels using a Motu 2408 Mk 3 in standalone mode via the ADAT out to the V 700 R. 8 from it and 8 on the V 700 R. If you're using USB for the UA-25, I'm not sure.
The VS 700 system will be much better I am sure.

Hey Steve I am sorry you are not hearing that Fantom yet! We will get you there. Checkout page 88 of the VS700 owners manual.  (or the first page after the front cover Fantom (VS) Synthesiser.)  The page I am referring to has the title at the top 'Inserting the Fantom VS Plug In'

One thing I forgot to mention too was the settings on the Midi Devices page. You need to make sure Fantom VS (VS700) is selcted in the Inputs and Output devices pages. Keep us informed Steve and let us know when you get that Fantom working! That Fantom is in there you just have not found it yet!

It doesn't matter if it's a USB 1 if you're going to use the optical out as far as I know. You should be able to sync the UA-25 to the V 700 R for eight more channels.
When you open Sonar 8 go to the surfaces/controllers page in options and make sure you have the console listed in the in/out ports. Open the Midi devices option and make sure you have Console and Fantom checked Inputs/Outputs. Uncheck everything else associated with the V700.
When you open a project with the Fantom inserted, you should get the Fantom coming up. Click the setup midi button and make sure you have Fantom VS in all four boxs.
As to your track inputs- All inputs Omni should work to start with on the Fantom midi track. You can point the input to the particular channel the controller sends later as well as set up multiple midi tracks for all 16 channels sent from your controller if it does that.
Make sure input monitoring is on. Make sure you have Fantom VS, left, right, or stereo in the input of the synth audio track, and of course that the output is set to get to your speakers. That should get you rolling.

I'm sure that's true Jeff/  I just need to hit the manual when I get back Monday.
I'm gonna try that input monitor button before I take off for the weekend.

And Craig, as to the UA 25 it's a USB 1 interface with digital I/O and analog.
I just took it out and stored it.  8 inputs is more than enough so far.
Now the 700 I/O does it all.
