VS 700 + Reaper?

Hey all,

Anyone using reaper with the VS 700 Console?

My Sonar is having lots of problems with VST's - incessant crashing, and tech support is still reviewing my dump files. I need to record and mix tomorrow so I installed Reaper to try it out (it will also help isolate if the VST problems are Sonar induced or my system.. which i highly doubt)

I love the VS-700, amazing surface. I know it emulates Mackie Control , but Reaper is not meshing well with it. It works, but barely. Does anyone have a template or any suggestions?

Thanks.

I'm also experiencing a lot of crashes with my system for over two years now, some months ago i took it to the Roland/Cakewalk HQ here in Belgium, let them update the system to windows 7 and X1 producers edition and they checked the whole system out, they told me it should work perfect after that, but sadly enough it didn't, at first withe the sonar8.5 it was +10 crashes a day, now i'm still experiencing +-5 crashes a day, it came to a point that i was considering buying a protools system back, but i am still hanging on and trying to live with the crashes, i am blaming windows  and hey... with the autosave on and the quick relaunch of a project it's just something that passes without a lot of words these days...

Wow... my probs with X1 are limited (so far) to older projects and I'm certain it ties in with getting 32 bit plug ins to work. Solution here was to use 8.5.3 for the older stuff and so far, X1 is working fine on the new stuff... hope that continues too coz I'd hate to crash the sessions with the new band in the room!! [:0]

Poppa if you are getting issues like that, I'd suggest trying 8.5 if you have it... not sure a new s/w platform is going to be any easier than getting a work around like 8.5.3 which is quite stable. This of course is assuming that the issues are not something other than Sonar of course.

The problems should only start once the mixing begins which is when the VST pain starts but assuming your pc is well, this should give no drama to you. I'm doing that very thing here with no issues with the 700 R & C gear and X1 with latest patches.

Hope it works out ok for you.

The problems come and go at random, last few weeks no problem what so ever, but some days it crashes constantly, like it get out of bed with the wrong foot. The only thing that seems to help at that point is restart the pc at least 3 times before doing anything else.

Your pc may be the problem, actually it most likely is the problem.  Many issues could come up if your Ram is having issues, HD isn't reading fast enough, maybe even the CPU is having a difficult time.  Honestly, If you only have 4 Gig's of ram, you sould make sure you runs Sonar in 32-bit mode, in the Win 64 bit, but honestly you should have win 7 32 bit installed instead of 64 bit if you don't have more then 4 gig's of ram, simply because it can cause issues with instability with programs and the way the processor handles things.

Great news Clada... very cool. Interesting the HDD wasn't able to be identified as the culprit earlier but great that is is now sorted out for you. Cheers.

Very happy for you Clada !

But concerning SSD, it's rather expensive, isn't it ? What capacity ?

    Re:VS 700 + Reaper? 2018/01/15 23:06:50 (permalink)
Hi there, I am also looking at Reaper as an alternative DAW in light of Sonar's situation.  Love Sonar, but I'm really starting to like Reaper right now.  it's only been 4 days, but I feel like I'm ready to make the switch.

As for the VS700, I was able to get about 30-40% functionality.  Right out of the box, the transport, track faders, pans, track mute/solo/arm, and jog/shuttle wheel all work once you set the control surface as Mackie.  Then, through the actions lists you can assign any action in that list to a button on the console.  Most buttons.  Some aren't coming up such as Save, Undo.  So all of the edit buttons can be mirrored exactly, and some of the View buttons.  Then, others are already assigned to different/weird functions.  For example the fader views buttons (track, buss, master) all assign different automations to a selected track, which is not really desirable for me.  Lastly, the track levels don't light, and the fader banks don't switch so looks like i'm stuck with just 8 plus the master.  At least, so far.

However, I have literally only spent about 30 minutes on this.  I'm sure there is more to discover on this and that's what I like much about Reaper so far.  Setting up what I have so far has been pretty darn easy, and with the functions I have now I can run my studio pretty well already.

Man, I believe the absolute minimum to run Sonar Platinum realistically is 8 Gigs RAM.

    Hi poetnprophet,
Very good to read your response here as I just downloaded the Reaper demo.  I'm positively new at the VS-700 and then the news came re: Cakewalk/Gibson.  So, I'm making my switch.  Have decided that Logic will be my main daw but Reaper will be my Windows platform backup.

How difficult is it to assign the buttons to any other than the default Mackie functions, or is it?  Are "action lists" similar to "learn" functions?  I'm very hopeful to make use of my VS-700 (if I cannot sell it).

    Thanks!

Yes, very similar to learn functions, however I find the action list easier to setup.  Simply type what you're looking for in the search field.  For example:  Transport.  This will bring up everything transport related, scroll through the list, pick one, click add, press the button or key combo.  Done.  Rinse/repeat.  Click the box to close window after assigning to speed things up.  I haven't gotten a chance to delve into it more, but I think I can get more out of it that what I have now, and what I have now is sufficiently sufficient for my workflow.  There were many buttons i never used on the console, so I now have a chance to get a little more functionality in some way and adapt it to my needs.

I wouldn't sell the VS if you don't have too.  It's a great piece of gear, even if just a niche piece of gear.  I have a feeling someone, someday, will create a definition file for it and will have full use again.  Hopeful at least.

I would really consider updating the PC. The CPU and Ram will be creating problems is you do any heavy work or load any powerful VSTs. An SSD helps, because it takes some of the work off the RAM, but I would still recommend updating the PC.

Cakewalk by Bandlab, Sonar Platinum Lifetimer, Windows 10, HP Laptop, CPU i5, RAM 8GB, Edirol FA-101 Firewire interface with moded drivers, Digital piano, more guitars than I should have:

And....I just found this, so I'm going to give this a try and I'll let you know.  Most noteworthy are the channel LEDs and fader bank button functionality.
